Internship Announcement
Application Deadline: First Friday of February

Intern in Washington, DC in the largest experiential learning program for Native American students, the Washington Semester American Indian Program (WINS). For over 11 years, American University has been hosting American Indian and Alaska Native students in this nationally recognized, academically, professionally, and socially enriching program. Most students receive a full scholarship that covers all program expenses plus a small stipend. Admission is competitive, so apply early for your best possible placement options. American Indian and Alaska Native students who are enrolled in a college or university as a sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student in good academic standing are eligible to apply to participate in WINS.

AU WINS Summer 2004 Program application deadline is the first Friday of February. The program will be June 1-July 31. Go to www.american.edu/wins to apply.

AAUW Educational Foundation Fellowships

Selected Professions Fellowships
Master's and first professional awards $5,000-$12,000

Fellowship year July 1, 2004-June 30, 2005

Women graduate students in designated fields traditionally underrepresented by women can receive one-year fellowships from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Educational Foundation.

Additional fellowships for the final year of study in the following fields are available to women of color only. Medical students are also eligible for funding in their third year of study.

  • Business Administration (M.B.A, E.M.B.A.)
  • Law (J.D.)
  • Medicine (M.D., D.O.)

Fellowship awards range from $5,000 to $12,000. The stipend for engineering dissertation fellowships only is fixed at $20,000.

HARVARD UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATIVE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Harvard University seeks to attract candidates, especially those from underrepresented ethnic minority groups, to administrative careers in higher education. Applicants must have at least five years of work experience. The 2004-05 Administrative Fellowship Program seeks applicants with B.A. degree and backgrounds in athletics/sports management, information technology, alumni affairs and development (conference planning and/or fund raising), research (behavioral sciences), finance, or human resources (employment and compensation).

  • Fellows receive stipends and are placed in full-time work assignments in Harvard schools or central administration departments for the duration of the Program.
  • Seminars, lectures and case studies have been designed for the Fellows to enhance management and administrative skills, self-assessment and career development.
  • Evaluation of the applications will be based on professional achievement, interviews at Harvard, and suitability for the Program.
  • Inclusive dates for the 2004-05 Program are September 2004 through August 2005.
  • Application deadline: February 13, 2004.

Fellowship Announcement

2005 Ian Axford (New Zealand) Fellowships in Public Policy.

Deadline: March 15, 2003.

The fellowships give outstanding American professionals at a mid-career level the opportunity to study, travel, and gain practical experience in public policy in New Zealand, including first-hand knowledge of economic, social and political reforms and management of the government sector. The program aims to reinforce New Zealand/United States links, improve public policy development by the cross-fertilization of ideas and experience, and build up a network of public policy experts on both sides of the Pacific.

Two to three Fellowships will be awarded for six months, starting in January/February 2005.Applicants must be U.S. citizens and submit a formal application.

DEPARTMENT OF LABOR LAUNCHES THIRD MBA FELLOWS CLASS

Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao has announced that the Department of Labor is accepting applications for a third class of MBA fellows to begin work at the agency in June 2004.

MBA fellows participate in an intensive two-year training and development program that is designed to provide them with competencies needed for future leadership positions within the government. The third class of fellows will serve from June 2004 through May 2006, at which point they will be eligible to join DOL as full-time career employees.

Applications for the MBA Fellows Program will be accepted beginning Jan. 1 through March 31, 2004. For the first time, DOL is accepting online applications to the program at www.jobs.dol.gov. Details about the program
and the application process are also available on the website.

NATIVE AMERICAN STUDIES OPPORTUNITIES

New for Fall 2004: Master of Arts in Native American Studies. The University of Oklahoma is accepting applications for its new MA program in Native American Studies. The two-year residential program includes seminars in Native American Studies, History, Anthropology, Art, Music, and English and two electives. Faculty include Craig Womack, Edgar Heap of Birds, Robert Warrior, Clara Sue Kidwell, Geary Hobson, Circe Sturm, Loretta Fowler, Grayson Noley, Gus Palmer, and Lindsay Robertson.

STARTING AUGUST 2004

One to two positions available: One of the appointments may be at advanced rank. Terminal degree required from an accredited college or university by August 15th, 2004. J.D. or Ph.D. in Native American Studies, or an allied field. Rank and salary dependent upon the appointee's qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will teach 12 weighted teaching units per semester and receive 3 additional units of normal ancillary duties.

DIRECTOR OF AMERICAN INDIAN STUDIES

Arizona State University invites nominations and applications for the position of DIRECTOR OF AMERICAN INDIAN STUDIES. The Director of American Indian Studies will lead a new and developing American Indian Studies Program toward national prominence. The position of director will be housed in American Indian Studies, and immediate tenure at the appropriate rank may be granted to a director with exceptional credentials.

Required Qualifications: Required qualifications include an advanced degree in a relevant discipline; a substantive scholarly record or demonstrated national prominence related to American Indian studies; a record of teaching, research and service, each appropriate to rank and tenure status; demonstrated administrative and leadership experience in an academic or
professional context; and effective communication skills.

Desired Qualifications: We desire a candidate with an earned doctorate; a record of national leadership and recognition in issues relevant to American Indian peoples, communities, and nations in the Southwest; and demonstrated success in managing budgets, raising funds, developing community partnerships and conducting studies important to American Indians.

Deadline: March 1, 2004, for full consideration. If the position is not filled, the first day of the month thereafter until the search is closed.
