LOS
ANGELES (October 28, 2003) — Explore the nighttime sky
with our friends at the Griffith Observatory! Start off the
evening with Dr. E. C. Krupp, director of the Griffith Observatory,
as he divulges the details of how Native Americans interpreted
and used the sky. Dr. Krupp is an expert on ancient, prehistoric,
and traditional astronomy. Dr. Krupp has visited more than
1,500 sites throughout the world and regularly leads field
study tours to exotic locations that have astronomical and
archaeological interest. This past August, he lectured on
the Stella Solaris cruise ship, coordinated passenger eclipse
viewing, and served as the “Voice of the Eclipse”
in the Black Sea for the August 11 total solar eclipse. He
then led a UCLA Extension field study tour to ancient sites
with astronomical connotations in southern Greece and in central
and southern Turkey.
After
the lecture, stroll on over to the Autry Museum’s South
Lawn and gather around a campfire backdrop as Geri Keams (Navajo)
weaves the story of Coyote Dancing With a Star. The fun continues
as we take an up-close and personal look at celestial objects
through telescopes provided by Friends of the Observatory.
This
program is free to the public and augments the exhibition
Glorious Treasures: 100 Years of Collecting by the Southwest
Museum, on view at the Autry through July 4, 2004. For more

Autry Museum of Western Heritage provides rich learning opportunities

Museum
admission: General adult, $7.50: seniors and students with
valid ID, $5: children ages 12 and under, $3. All programs
are wheelchair accessible. Located in Los Angeles’s Griffith
Park where the Golden State (5) and Ventura (134) freeways
meet, the Autry Museum is across from the Los Angeles Zoo.
On surface streets, it can be reached from Forest Lawn Dr.,
Victory Blvd., or Los Feliz Blvd. The museum is 15 minutes
from the Los Angeles Civic Center and is accessible using
MTA Bus Route 96. Parking is free.
