Media Internships in Urban Health Reporting offer summer internships
(eleven print, three television) to young minority journalists interested
in specializing in health reporting. Typically, interns selected are
graduating from college and/or journalism school with quite considerable newsroom experience, including previous internships at a newspaper or TV station. Previous reporting experience and/or academic expertise in health, medical or science-related issues, or urban affairs, is a plus, but not an absolute requirement. The Kaiser Internship Program provides an initial week-long briefing on urban public health issues and health reporting in Washington, D.C. Interns are then based for ten weeks at their newspaper/TV station, typically under the direction of the Health or Metro Editor/News Director, where they report on health issues. The program ends with a 3-day meeting and site visits in Boston. The aim is to provide young journalists or journalism college graduates with an in-depth introduction to and practical experience on the specialist health beat. Each participating news organization makes the final selection of their intern, starting November/December. The 2003 Kaiser Media Internship host news organizations are: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Boston Globe, The Detroit Free Press, The Los Angeles Times, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, The Orlando Sentinel/El Sentinel (The Orlando Sentinel intern needs to be bilingual in English and Spanish.), The Oregonian, The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, The San Jose Mercury News, The Sun-Sentinel, Fort Lauderdale, The Washington Post, KTVU/2-TV, San Francisco-Oakland, KXAS/5-TV, Dallas Fort-Worth, WAGA/5-TV, Atlanta Award: $6,000 for twelve week period plus travel and training expenses Deadline: December 2, 2002 for print applicants; January 10, 2003 for TV applicants Program dates: June 1 - August 20, 2003 Application
