SYNOPSIS:
The sponsor provides support to nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations working on issues of the environment, women, civil liberties and democratic values, civil rights and race relations, children's and youth-related issues with a focus on the economically disadvantaged, and AIDS research, advocacy, service and litigation. Awards range from $1,000 to $25,000; however, most awards are in the range of $10,000 to $20,000.

OBJECTIVES:
Areas of interest include funding organizations that support diverse writers through publication, presentation, and distribution. Funding for projects in indigenous communities supports the resolve of Native people to renew their communities through their own institutions and traditions. Funding priority is given to rural community projects that are consistent with traditional values in the areas of environmental protection and advocacy, legal rights, language revitalization, traditional culture, and education.

The sponsor provides support for research in Native American linguistics and ethnohistory, and the history of studies of Native Americans in the continental United States and Canada. Eligible applicants are younger
scholars who have received the doctorate, and graduate students. Grants average $2,200 for one year.

OBJECTIVES:
The sponsor provides support for research in Native American linguistics and ethnohistory, and the history of studies of Native Americans in the continental United States and Canada. Grants are not made for projects in
archaeology, ethnography, psycholinguistics, or for the preparation of pedagogical materials. The sponsor distinguishes contemporary ethnography from ethnohistory as the study of cultures and culture change through time.

ELIGIBILITY
The sponsor prefers to make awards to support the work of younger scholars who have received the doctorate. Applications are also accepted from graduate students, for research on master's or doctoral dissertations. The
sponsor will seldom approve more than two awards to the same person within a five year period. Applicants may be residents of the United States, or American citizens resident abroad. Foreign nationals are eligible to apply
for projects to be carried out in the United States.

FUNDING
The average award is about $2,200; grants do not exceed $3,000. Grants are ordinarily given for one year following the date of the award. The grants are intended for such extra costs as travel, tapes, films, and consultants' fees, but not for general maintenance or the purchase of books or permanent equipment.

Sponsor: Administration for Native Americans/Administration for Children and Families/DHHS

 

SYNOPSIS:
Support is provided for projects to promote the goal of social and economic self-sufficiency for American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Native American Pacific Islanders through locally developed social and economic development strategies (SEDS). A total of $20 million is expected to be available to fund approximately 150 grants ranging from $50,000 to $1,000,000.

CALL FOR PAPERS - PLEASE CIRCULATE

 

The Department of Ethnography of The British Museum will be organizing a conference on the subject of Powwow. February 21-23 2003.

This conference will provide an opportunity to examine the ways in which the concept of Powwow has been developed and redefined over the course of the 20th century by Native people - from its beginnings in the early twentieth century as part of a Pan-Indian response to enforced assimilation and acculturation - to its contemporary _expression in vibrant festivals held throughout North America.

You are invited to submit a short proposal on any related topic.

Deadline for proposals is December 1st.

Modest travel, accommodation and subsistence expenses are available for speakers (if other funding is unavailable).
