On
the topic: Maintaining Connections: Natives in Academia and
Community Unification, Activism, and Responsibility November
5-6, 2004
Hosted by the Cornell Council of American Indian Graduate
and Professional Students
In
an effort to establish connections among American Indian students
in higher education across campuses, the Cornell Council of
American Indian Graduate and Professional Students will be
hosting a colloquium open to all working in the broadly defined
field of Native American studies, to include scientists, authors,
musicians, artists, and scholars in law, humanities, and professional
training. It is our hope that students from partnering universities
will host future conferences in this series.
The
primary goals of the conference are to bolster a sense of
American Indian community and collectively establish a presence
to represent indigenous voices in matters of curriculum, recruitment
and retention of American Indian students and faculty in the
university. We envision this organization and this colloquium
as an opportunity to showcase the variety and richness of
work in the field, and as the beginning of a dialogue to address
the political and social issues confronting Native students
in higher education. We hope that by unifying a collective
voice, potential opportunities will increase, and political
action will become more feasible.
A
limited number of hotels rooms will be reserved for presenters;
attendees must make their own arrangements. The website www.visitithaca.com
lists a number of accommodations, attractions, maps and general
travel information for the area.
Submissions
of poster projects and papers must be submitted by July 1,
2004.
A
registration fee of $25.00 per person will be required by
September 1, 2004 to help offset the cost of a catered dinner
Friday night. This dinner will be open to all, at no additional
cost, but we will only have room for fifty attendees. Registration
to attend the conference must also be completed by September
1.
Please
send proposals and/or papers as attached Word documents to
joshuabnelson@aya.yale.edu.
To
register, please send name, address, phone, and email address,
and number attending to this email address as well.
