Fellowship Opportunity for Activists of Color: Alston/Bannerman
Fellowship Program
|
|
The
Alston/Bannerman Fellowship Program is committed to advancing
progressive social change by helping to sustain long-time
activists of color. The program honors those who have devoted
their lives to helping their communities organize for racial,
social, economic and environmental justice. The program provides
resources for organizers to take sabbaticals for reflection
and renewal. Each year 10 long term activists of color are
awarded $15,000 each to take sabbaticals of three months or
more. This is a both a reward and an opportunity for rest
and reflection for dedicated people who have been busting
their butts working on tough issues for years. Recipients
are not required to produce anything during their sabbatical
period and can use the time however they choose. This year's
application deadline is December 1.

TRIBAL LANDS RESEARCH & WRITING ASSISTANT
|

Rocky
Mountain Natural Resource Center (Boulder, Colorado)
NWF
is seeking a Research and Writing Assistant for its Tribal
Lands Program. The Research and Writing Assistant will research,
compile and draft tribal conservation case studies. Other
duties include assisting staff with fundraising; working with
contractors on designing and publishing tribal case studies;
distributing case studies to inter-tribal groups, tribal conservation
staff, state and federal wildlife agencies, tribal colleges
and regional state universities.
Qualifications:
Bachelor?s degree in Journalism, Communications, English and
or Environmental Science or related field; two years experience
in researching and writing documents on conservation related
activities; excellent communication, writing and research
skills; and willingness to travel (local and out of state).
This is a one-year benefits eligible appointment. Preference
is given to those with experience in working with tribes &
tribal personnel. Salary is $28,080. NWF offers an excellent

NATIVE
AMERICAN/AMERICAN INDIAN STUDIES at Brown University
The
Brown University Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity
in America (CSREA) announces an open rank, tenure-track or
tenured faculty position in Native American/American Indian
studies. The anticipated starting date is July 1, 2004. We
are seeking an interdisciplinary scholar with grounding in
the humanities or social sciences who will contribute to ethnic
studies at Brown University. The tenure home will be in the
department appropriate to the educational background and primary
field of the scholar, with the appointment shared between
CSREA/Ethnic Studies and the department. We welcome all applicants
whose fields include: Native American, American Indian, Native
Hawaiian, and Native Alaskan. A Ph.D. and a record of excellence
in teaching and research are required of all candidates. Assistant
professor applicants should have a doctorate in a relevant
field and some university-level teaching experience. Associate
professor applicants are expected to have a substantial publication
record and evidence of emerging leadership in their field.
Full professor applicants are expected, in addition, to have
an established national and international reputation as an
acknowledged leader in their area ofscholarship. Applicants
at advanced ranks will be treated with confidence, and candidates
at these ranks should provide with their application letter
and curriculum vita, the names of five references, who will
be contacted by the search committee as appropriate. Beginning
assistant professors should submit a letter of application,

Position Announcement

MICHIGAN
STATE UNIVERSITY: The Department of Anthropology invites applications
for a tenure track Assistant Professor position in medical
anthropology. The Michigan State University graduate program
in medical anthropology is more than twenty years old and
has produced many outstanding graduates who now hold influential
positions throughout the U.S. and the world. We seek applications
from individuals who hold a Ph.D.in sociocultural anthropology
or who will hold the degree by the time of the appointment.
Research should focus on health as related to class, ethnicity/race,
gender, and/or age. The candidate should specialize in at
least some of the following areas: cultural construction of
health and illness; political economy of health; health and
environment; health inequality, health policy and medical
ethics. Candidates focusing on Native North American, Africa,
or Asia will be given preference. Responsibilities include
teaching four anthropology courses per academic year, pursuing
research interests, and working with and advising graduate
students. The four-course teaching assignment will be drawn
from introductory, general, and interdisciplinary courses,
and from undergraduate and graduate courses in the person?s
topical and geographic-area specialties. The position begins
August 16, 2004; the application deadline is December
5, 2003 or until a suitable candidate has been selected.

Regional Extension Educator, Diversity and Inclusion
|
|
ABOUT
THIS POSITION
The REE, Diversity and Inclusion, along with other regional
educators, faculty based on the university?s campuses, university
research and outreach centers, regional sustainable partnerships,
tribal colleges, and other colleagues will meet the needs
of communities who are facing demographic changes. Regional
Extension educators are responsible for several major areas
of work, including program development, delivery and evaluation;
attention to diversity; use of scholarly/scientific research,
effective partnerships, use of technology and continuing professional
development.
The
REE, Diversity and Inclusion will provide educational programs
that help organizations, community groups and individuals
better understand and work within the context of demographic
change. As a result, communities will be better able to strengthen
ties among cultures in order to stimulate vital communities.
Currently, diversity and inclusion programs spotlight on specific
cultures, discuss the history of immigration in Minnesota,
train workplaces to work with diverse audiences, and tie communities
to resources that lower linguistic barriers for the non-English-speaking
population.
The
position will be located in the new Extension Regional Center
in Marshall, Minnesota and will serve a multi-county area
in southeast Minnesota. Although located in Marshall, the
REE will serve a much greater area defined by the area program
leader and capacity area leader. The REE will report to the
area program leader and capacity area leader for Community
Vitality. The REE will also collaborate with the Regional
Director as appropriate to fulfill Extension?s mission.
RESPONSIBILITIES
AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
-
Design,
develop, market, deliver and evaluate educational programs
based in scholarly/scientific theory and research and
appropriate to the audience, with attention to diversity,
in conjunction with the capacity area leader and program
teams. Assume program leadership for a defined period
of time on an identified program, project or priority,
as agreed to by the capacity area leader. Programs will
target communities experiencing culturally-based demographic
changes as they develop and implement strategies to strengthen
community assets.

Use
and conduct scholarly/scientific research in the diversity
and inclusion area of expertise

Work
with and develop programs for new, diverse, and historically
underserved audiences

Develop
and maintain effective regional, university and state
partnerships that further the development and delivery
of Extension educational programs

Foster
and contribute to a positive work climate with colleagues,
advisory groups, audiences and partnerships. Partner and
consult with other areas of expertise within Extension
to support culturally and linguistically appropriate programming.
Affiliate with the Leadership and Civic Engagement or
the Community Economics areas of expertise to ensure culturally
and linguistically appropriate programming to build leadership
and economic opportunity for new cultures.

Use
technology to communicate, locate information, design
and deliver programs, evaluate and report

Assume
program support functions such as public relations or
marketing in collaboration with regional director and
capacity area leader

Continue
professional development in scholarship/research and program
development and delivery via conferences, additional graduate
work, self-directed study and other appropriate means
of maintaining a high level of expertise

Garner
funds and resources to support educational programs through
grants and other means, as outlined in a diversity and
inclusion program business plan.

Represent
Extension through service on county, community and regional
boards This will also include service to civic groups,
joint Extension-agency project committees, and other committees
and task forces.
All
of these opportunities are expected to be congruent with your
area of expertise.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor's degree. Formal education should include significant
coursework in a field related to fields such as multiculturalism
or intercultural studies; education, human development, social
development; public policy, planning and/or administration;
applied or community economics; community psychology; cultural
studies; international education; sociology or anthropology;
and/or a closely related field.
Experience:
At least three years of related post-degree professional experience,
including experience in the design, development, delivery,
implementation and evaluation of educational programs and
in program development for new and diverse audiences. At least
two years of the post degree professional experience must
be in related organizations such as higher education; community
or interest-based organizations; state, regional or local
development agencies; cooperative extension; adult education;
and/or foundations. Experience must include creating effective
and supportive community dialog in the face of conflict and
change.
Skills/Abilities:
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
The knowledge, skills and ability to apply research to program
design, delivery and evaluation. The knowledge, skills and
ability to use the methods of scholarship and science to design
and conduct research and/or play an essential role in a research
project sponsored by an academic unit. Evidence of skill in
developing and maintaining effective working relationships
with colleagues, partners and stakeholders. Evidence of ability
to use technology for communication, information finding,
program delivery and reporting. Commitment to ongoing professional
development.
PREFERRED
QUALIFICATIONS
A Master's degree. Experience working and/or living in multiple
cultures, either domestically or internationally. Fluency
and/or study of a language other than English.
