Ford Foundation Fellowships for Minorities

 

Application Deadline Dates:
Predoctoral-November 19, 2003
Dissertation-December 3, 2003
Postdoctoral: December 17, 2003

Eligibility Requirements:

  • U.S. citizen or national
  • Native American Indian, Mexican American/Chicana/Chicano, Alaska Native (Eskimo or Aleut), Native Pacific Islander (Polynesian or Micronesian), Black/African American, or Puerto Rican
  • Planning a career in teaching and research at the college or university level

Stipend and Allowances:

  • Predoctoral-$17,000 to the fellow, institutional allowance of $6,000 for three years
  • Dissertation-$21,000 for one year
  • Postdoctoral-$40,000 for one year, $1,500 employing institution allowance, to be matched by employing institution
  • All awardees have expenses paid to attend at least one Conference of Ford Fellows

Fellowship Opportunity for Activists of Color: Alston/Bannerman Fellowship Program

The Alston/Bannerman Fellowship Program is committed to advancing progressive social change by helping to sustain long-time activists of color. The program honors those who have devoted their lives to helping their communities organize for racial, social, economic and environmental justice. The program provides resources for organizers to take sabbaticals for reflection and renewal. Each year 10 long term activists of color are awarded $15,000 each to take sabbaticals of three months or more. This is a both a reward and an opportunity for rest and reflection for dedicated people who have been busting their butts working on tough issues for years. Recipients are not required to produce anything during their sabbatical period and can use the time however they choose. This year's application deadline is December 1.

Professional Research Assistant

The American Indian and Alaska Native Programs, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center seeks a full-time Professional Research Assistant to serve as a Multimedia Coordinator. Responsibilities include: Coordinating consultants' multimedia needs as products are developed, assisting with the research and purchase of equipment, including maintenance, repair, and inventory. For two recently funded projects, this position will develop and conduct monthly technical trainings to introduce program participants to the different types and examples of audiovisual products, review critical decisions in tailoring products to anticipated audiences and desired impacts, and provide a planning framework for their conceptualization, financing, development, marketing, and evaluation.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required; intermediate-level experience with database software (MS Access preferred); extensive experience with a wide variety of multimedia equipment; extensive experience training others in multimedia concepts; ability to work independently and as part of a team; willingness to travel on occasion.

Salary Range: $45,000 - $55,000.

Professional Research Assistant

The American Indian and Alaska Native Programs, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, seek a Professional Research Assistant responsible for assisting with two research projects. The first, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, is designed to explore new approaches to mental health research in urban American Indian communities. The second, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is designed to identify promising approaches to addressing substance abuse treatment needs of American Indian and Alaska Native women at risk for losing custody of their children.

Responsibilities: coordinating data collection with the Project Leader and developing a database of exemplary programs addressing the substance abuse treatment needs of American Indian and Alaska Native women.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience; knowledge about rural/urban Indian communities; ability to work independently; organization and efficiency; Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills; computer skills in word processing (MS Word preferred) and database management (MS Access preferred).

Salary Range: $35,000-$40,000.

Native American Studies Faculty Position

Pending budgetary approval, the Native American Studies Program within the Ethnic Studies Department of the University of California, Berkeley, seeks applicants for a full time position open as to the subfield with NAS and
open as to rank. Fluency and/or proficiency in at least one native language of the Americas is desirable. An ability to teach in the department's ethnic studies undergraduate and graduate programs is also desirable. Applications are due by November 14, 2003, for a start date of July 1, 2004. Assistant/Associate Professor, Division of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, Educational Administration

The College of Education at Arizona State University is seeking to hire a faculty member appointable at the rank of Associate Professor to advise and teach graduate students in an innovative field-based Program of Educational Administration; direct thesis and dissertation research; advise and mentor students by providing expertise in research.

Required qualifications for the position

  • an earned doctorate degree in educational administration or related area;
  • successful experience in university teaching, advising doctoral students, and directing thesis and dissertation research appropriate to rank;
  • evidence of a record of scholarly productivity appropriate to rank.

Desired qualifications for the position

  • record of successful collaborative research efforts involving practicing school administrators;
  • demonstrated knowledge of issues related to urban education and/or experience as a public school administrator;
  • record of scholarly productivity in areas such as instructional leadership and development, school improvement, and/or school reform; experience in working with diverse school populations;
  • associate professor qualifications.

Position Announcement
NATIVE AMERICAN/AMERICAN INDIAN STUDIES at Brown University

The Brown University Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America (CSREA) announces an open rank, tenure-track or tenured faculty position in Native American/American Indian studies. The anticipated starting date is July 1, 2004. We are seeking an interdisciplinary scholar with grounding in the humanities or social sciences who will contribute to ethnic studies at Brown University. The tenure home will be in the department appropriate to the educational background and primary field of the scholar, with the appointment shared between CSREA/Ethnic Studies and the department. We welcome all applicants whose fields include: Native American, American Indian, Native Hawaiian, and Native Alaskan. A Ph.D. and a record of excellence in teaching and research are required of all candidates. Assistant professor applicants should have a doctorate in a relevant field
and some university-level teaching experience. Associate professor applicants are expected to have a substantial publication record and evidence of emerging leadership in their field. Full professor applicants are expected, in addition, to have an established national and international reputation as an acknowledged leader in their area of scholarship. Applicants at advanced ranks will be treated with confidence, and candidates at these ranks should provide with their application letter and curriculum vita, the names of five references, who will be contacted by the search committee as appropriate. Beginning assistant professors should submit a letter of application, a curriculum vita, and, under separate cover, three letters of reference.
