Preference is given to those who have not previously participated in the program and who do not have substantial recent experience abroad. Persons who have lived abroad for five or more consecutive years in the six-year period preceding the date of application are not eligible.

The InterTribal Bison Cooperative (ITBC) is a Native American non-profit organization whose mission is the restoration of bison back to Indian lands for spiritual, cultural, ecological, and economic developmental purposes. Currently, the Cooperative comprises fifty federally recognized tribes spanning sixteen states.

ITBC is hosting its 3rd Annual National Conference on August 13-15, 2000 in Santa Fe, New Mexico in partnership with the Pueblo Tribes of Taos, Picuris, San Juan, Nambe, Pojoaque, Tesuque, and Sandia. Our theme this year is Sacred Buffalo: Restoring Healthy Native Nations.


Internships Available
The InterTribal Bison Cooperative

RAPID CITY - (ITBC), a non-profit organization, is accepting applications for a unique internship program aimed toward restoring bison on Indian lands across the United States. Fifteen (15) internships, made possible by a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, are available to tribal college students and employees of tribal natural resources programs. Each selected applicant will be provided the opportunity for working with a bison herd by placement at a national park, nature preserve, or tribal bison project at varied locations across the western states. Interns will interact with herd managers on a day-to-day basis and will gain invaluable hands-on experience in the areas of rangeland management for ecological diversity, sustainable economic development strategies and the management of buffalo as a wildlife species. The program is open to individuals 18 years and older, who are in a college degree program that includes emphasis on natural resource management, wildlife conservation, agriculture, Native American studies or a related field. Applications are also accepted from individuals who are presently employed with tribal land/natural resources programs or tribal buffalo projects.

Established in 1992, the ITBC has a membership of 50 tribes nationwide. The Cooperative's mission, as defined by its membership, is to re-establish buffalo herds on Indian lands in a manner that promotes cultural enhancement, spiritual revitalization, ecological restoration and economic development.

Qualifications: Education and Experience: Master's degree in Business Administration or related field and four (4) years of managerial experience, preferably with a development organization.

Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledgeable of administrative policies and procedures; Effective supervisory and management principles; grantsmanship, budget preparation, and fiscal management; tribal, county, state, and federal programs. Ability to establish and implement goals and objectives; plan, organize, and evaluate project development; establish and maintain
effective working relationships with funding agencies and the general public; work with rules and regulations; exercise good judgment in business decision-making.

Salary: $48,000 first year, performance-based 5% increase for 2nd year

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management (IIIRM)
Denver, CO

The International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management (IIIRM) in Denver is currently accepting resumes for several paid internships it will be offering this summer and throughout the next year. Internships are in the areas of tribal natural resource management broadly and they range from three-month summer projects to year long post-graduate placements. Examples of research projects undertaken by IIIRM interns include: research into the environmental justice implications for tribes of the National Environmental Policy Act; the environmental justice implications of the Skull Valley Band of Goshute's Decision to accept radioactive waste. There are upcoming intern opportunities within IIIRM research projects focused on the ethical, legal, social, and cultural implications for tribes of the Human Genome project; a survey of
intellectual property rights and the regulatory response of the Maori in New Zealand; and the burdens and benefits for tribes of bioremediation and other cleanup technologies at U.S. Department of Energy and other federal sites

While IIIRM has on-going research projects to which interns will be assigned, IIIRM also looks to interns to design their particular slice of that research in accordance with their academic interests and career goals. Description: Work closely with tribes, NAU faculty, ITEP staff, EPA management/technical staff and TAMS Steering Committee in establishing the organizational and operational structure of the TAMS Center. Responsible for building expertise of tribal professionals in air monitoring program design, operation and maintenance, data management and analysis which includes development of technical training, support programs and capabilities of tribal air monitoring needs. Assists in grant proposals. Works independently or as part of a team in assessing tribal training needs, planning and developing new programs that support tribal air quality development. Works independently or in a team in program evaluations. Report to ITEP Director on status and progress of TAMS Center.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, natural science or related field of study. 4 years of direct experience in an environmental regulatory program, preferably in tribal air quality. Specific knowledge in air quality monitoring, data analysis and other associated technical applications. Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

General Information The Training and Outreach Manager will be responsible for long-range, strategic planning and development of an ambient air monitoring training and support program for tribal air quality professionals. The T/O Manager will be required to work directly with USEPA and other Tribal Air Quality Professionals to develop and implement all program applications of the TAMS Center. The goal of TAMS Center is to provide training and technical support devoted to tribal air
quality programs across the U.S. The T/O Manager will be an employee of ITEP, Northern Arizona University. This position is contingent on award of grant.

Annual Salary: $42,000-$48,000 depending on experience

Description: Works closely with ITEP, USEPA staff and the TAMS Steering Committee to provide general administrative support in the administration and operation of the TAMS Center. Prepares routine documents, monitors budget expenditures and financial reports, compiles data, files, answers phone calls. Works closely with TAMS Training and Outreach Manger to research and develop training program material and curriculum for advanced air quality monitoring training. Tasks includes
editing, composition and utilization of basic math skills in the development and production of materials. General Information: The Administrative Assistant will be responsible for secretarial and administrative functions to support the planning and development of an ambient air monitoring training and support program for tribal air quality professionals.Under supervision of the TAMS Training and Outreach Manger, the Administrative Assistant will perform administrative tasks associated with the operation of the TAMS Center. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Extension Educator
Youth and Family Development
University of Minnesota Extension Service

Application Deadline: June 22,2000

The University of Minnesota Extension Service is the major outreach arm of the University of Minnesota. This educator will be part of an office team with two existing educators, one administrative assistant, and a nutritional education assistant. Office responsibilities are divided and shared. Educational program emphasis for this position includes:

  • providing leadership to the country's after school activity centers in supporting staff, seeking funding, and recruiting children
  • collaborating with local agencies and organizations serving young children and families to provide resources, deliver programs, and address critical issues related to youth and families
  • coordinating of specific 4-H club program activities and events as determined by the office team
  • networking with cluster, district and state colleagues in response to program needs in the areas of families and young children
  • coordinating the Extension Home Study Group Program

Qualifications: A bachelor's degree is required. A degree in a field of study which, when combined with relevant work experience, projects a well-rounded knowledge of family and/or youth development is preferred. Acceptance into a graduate program or academic achievement at a level qualifying the applicant for admission to graduate school is required. Master's degree is preferred.
