American Legion-Boys State
As a program of The American Legion, Boys State developed from the concept that youth should be offered a better perspective of the practical operation of government; that the individual is an integral part and commensurately responsible for the character and success of his government. As such, it is an activity of high educational value, born out of a need for youth training in practical citizenship.

A Walk to Remember
The “Walk To Remember” was a huge success! Friendships developed and the commitment to saving the lake and the region was affirmed and reaffirmed in lodges, city halls, mainstreets, back roads, sidewalks, and dusty paths. We all learned that standing side by side in a good way and asking the spirits to guide us will keep us strong and our lakes, homes, rivers, and forests will be protected!

When Meriwether Lewis and William Clark arrived in North Dakota, on their way to the Pacific Coast under the charge of President Thomas Jefferson, they were greeted by members of the Hidatsa tribe. They were Gerald Baker's ancestors, and he said they probably greeted the two Louisiana Purchase explorers with an expression that, roughly translated, means "What are you guys doing here?"

New Perspectives on THE WEST
In a conversation with us several years ago, the Kiowa poet N. Scott Momaday remarked that the American West "is a place that has to be seen to be believed, and it may have to be believed in order to be seen." For five years we have travelled that landscape, photographed its vistas, talked to its people, sought out its history, all as part of our production of THE WEST, an eight-part documentary series for public television. Now -- 100,000 air-miles and 72 filmed interviews and 74 visits to archives and collections and more than 250 hours of film later -- we have begun to understand at least something of what Momaday meant.

North American Indigenous Games
In our cultures, to vision quest is strong and good medicine. To have a vision for the people is powerful and to fulfill a vision for the people is sacred. Our ancestors were given visions by the Creator, which lead the peoples to govern themselves. The North American Indigenous Games was a vision.

Peace and Dignity Journey 2012: Dedicated to the Water
Peace and Dignity Journeys was started in 1992 to continue in the spirit of the traditions of our ancestors. Every four years Indigenous communities all over North, Central and South America witness and partake in the tradition of receiving runners with ceremonies unique to their community, sharing stories, song, dance, and the wisdom that comes from community elders and ceremony. Peace and Dignity Journeys runners start simultaneously from both ends of the continent in Chickaloon, Alaska and Tierra del Fuego, Argentina traversing the entire continent by foot from community to community and joining together for a final gathering in Central America, Panama. The 2012 run is dedicated to Water, reminding all who have forgotten that Water is an important resource and a shared resource for all.

Phoenix Indian Center
The Phoenix Indian Center, Inc., was established in 1947 to serve the needs of the American Indians who came to downtown Phoenix to sell their arts and crafts or shop for their families. They needed a place to receive messages, freshen up, or socialize with other Indians. After years of using volunteers to help maintain the location on Wall Street (Downtown), the Center received funding and began to incorporate. In 1954, the Center incorporated with the State of Arizona as a private non-profit 501(c)3 status. Today, the Center is the primary resource of social, economic, educational, leadership, employment and training for urban American Indians of Maricopa County.
