Guide to Grammar & Writing: Adjectives
This Guide to Grammar article for high-school students and grownups, explores adjectives in more depth. "Unlike adverbs, which often seem capable of popping up almost anywhere in a sentence, adjectives nearly always appear immediately before the noun or noun phrase that they modify. Sometimes they appear in a string of adjectives, and when they do, they appear in a set order according to category." For more on the order of adjectives, scroll down to the Royal Order of Adjectives table.

Vocabulary Activities
Education experts agree that vocabulary is a vital part of school success, and that reading is the best way to develop one's vocabulary. But online games and quizzes are one way of shaking it up, and it never hurts to have a little variety in one's learning toolbox. Here are my vocab picks for the week.
A.Word.A.Day
Daily words are usually selected around a weekly theme, and emailed free (with definitions) to over a million subscribers. Each word includes the definition, audio pronunciation, etymology, and examples of usage. You can view today's and yesterday's word at the website with a direct link from the left-hand nav. A complete archive of past words is available in either a chronological or alphabetical order, and in plain text as well as the more common HTML web format.

Sheppard Software Vocabulary Games
In addition to word games such as Hangman and Cluecless Crossword, Sheppard offers five vocabulary quizzes with encouraging spoken feedback. "Good." "Right." "Yes." "Great!" Two of the games draw from a vocabulary of 720 commonly-tested SAT/GRE words. Each round consists of twenty select-the-definition questions, so you can play over and over again, with very little repetition. The others are an expert-level vocab game (with words like "opprobrium" and "eldritch"), and quizzes on computer and medical terminology.

Each test/game offers three levels of difficulty, so you can start at a level that's just right for you.

Richard Feynman
Although American physicist Richard Feynman won the Nobel prize in 1965, it was his books of anecdotes ("Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!" and "What Do You Care What Other People Think?") and his appointment to the presidential Challenger disaster investigation commission in 1986, that raised him to icon status. Feynman was an independent thinker, extremely intolerant of stupidity. Learn why Feynman fans are so devoted at today's website picks.

Basic Feynman
Created by publisher Basic Books, Basic Feynman goes beyond book promotion and includes Feynman letters, videos, photos, quotes and links to additional sites. I loved Feynman's letter to a high school student who loved physics, but was worried about his lack of math aptitude. "How do you know you don't have an aptitude for math? Perhaps you disliked your teacher, or it was presented wrong for your type of mind. What do I advise? Forget it all. Don't be afraid. Do what you get the greatest pleasure from. Is it to build a cloud chamber? Then go on doing things like that. Develop your talents wherever they may lead. Damn the torpedoes?full speed ahead!"

Feynman Online
This Feynman fan site (part of the Feynman Web Ring) has a message forum, and good collection of Feynman anecdotes. Best clicks are the personal stories found in the Guest Book and Anecdotes, and the articles (both onsite and off) in Life & Science. Don't miss the two Feynman Think Different posters created by Apple as part of their 1998 ad campaign. You'll find them under Other Good Stuff.

Richard Feynman Science Videos
In 1979, Feynman delivered a series of lectures introducing his Nobel-prize winning concepts of quantum electrodynamics (QED) to the physics department of Auckland University, New Zealand. Those lectures are presented here in four streaming video segments. Don't let yourself be intimated by the subject matter. Click on the first video, and give it a try. They are noteworthy because they show Feynman's renown style and enthusiasm.

Collected Thoughts: Richard Feynman
To keep himself "focused on Life's important questions," twenty-five year old Erik Madsen created a collection of writings from a handful of great thinkers. The Feynman page delivers a short bio and eight articles, excerpted from three of his books. Because I find them most accessible, my favorites are the three stories from "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! " Other featured thinkers include authors Mark Twain and J.R.R. Tolkien, and physicist Robert Oppenheimer.

Nobel Prize: Feynman Lecture
In Feynman's 1965 Nobel Prize acceptance speech, he tells the story of a theory he dreamt up as an undergraduate physics student at MIT. "That was the beginning, and the idea seemed so obvious to me and so elegant that I fell deeply in love with it. And, like falling in love with a woman, it is only possible if you do not know much about her, so you cannot see her faults. The faults will become apparent later, but after the love is strong enough to hold you to her." Years later Feynman found many faults with his original idea, but concluded his speech by calling that undergraduate theory the mother of the idea that won him the Nobel Prize.

Night Sky
Although kids may enjoy an inexpensive telescope, experts say there is plenty to see with just your eyes or a pair of binoculars. Start in your own backyard or neighborhood, using the following sites as an introduction to the nightly show.
AstroViewer: Interactive Night Sky Map
This interactive night sky map is so easy to use, it barely needs any explanation. To begin, click the start button and enter your location. By default, the constellation outlines and names will display for today's date. Some details display by hovering your mouse over the labels, others require a mouse click. Additional options, such as displaying Latin constellation names, or dwarf planets, are available on the More button.

http://www.astroviewer.com/interactive-night-sky-map.php
EarthSky: Tonight
A mockup of tonight's sky is front and center on EarthSky's Tonight page. In the right-hand column, you'll find a calendar listing of night sky events that will be on display in the coming week. Scroll down the page for a simple explanation of nightly events such as the phases of Venus or the 2012 transit of Venus. "Eye protection is absolutely essential for watching a transit of Venus. Contact an observatory or astronomy club near you to see if a public showing may be available."

http://earthsky.org/tonight
Heavens Above
Have you ever seen the International Space Station cross the night sky? Track its (or any other satellite's) course using this interactive tool. Start by selecting your location on the Google map, and clicking the Submit button. Other tools include the tracking of visible comets, iridium flares, and a whole sky chart (customized to your location, of course.) "An Iridium flare is caused by the sun being reflected from one of the three main mission antennae (MMA) of an Iridium satellite. The MMAs are flat, highly polished aluminium surfaces, and when the angles are just right, they can reflect the sun just like a mirror."

HubbleSite: Tonight's Sky
"Your guide to constellations, deep sky objects, planets and events." The guides here are in video, and provide a good introduction to monthly sky events. In addition to the monthly podcasts, visit HubbleSite for an introduction to Hubble's scientific achievements, a gallery of "spectacular pictures of stars, galaxies, nebulae" and an overview of how the Hubble telescope operates.

StarDate: Night Sky
These daily stargazing tips are short and sweet, perfect for backyard astronomers. Visit to learn which planets and constellations are making an appearance this week, and for a visual guide to the moon's phases. Links at the bottom of this week's tips will take you to related articles about skywatching, constellations, and lunar phases. "Light pollution is the single most destructive foe to a dedicated stargazer, overwhelming the delicate glow of nebulae, clusters, and even the fiery glow of the dense star clouds that make up the Milky Way. For this reason alone, the best stargazing opportunities are almost always to be found in remote rural areas, far from the lights of cities and towns."
