College outreach program for American Indian students taking applications

Applications are being accepted for a summer program to expose American Indian students to college and the science field.

The Native American Research Center for Health will hold a two-week Native American Youth Summer Program with classes and field trips to universities and reservations around the county. High school and undergraduate students will learn computer technology, research, biomedical and physical sciences and American Indian cultures.

"You don't find many Native American people in the science profession," said Marc Chavez, program director. "And the college-going rate is very small. There is no academic college support program for Native students."

The free program runs July 24 to Aug. 7. Students will live and study at local universities and reservations. Students will earn three units of college credit from Palomar College.

A short application and one-page essay is required by Wednesday for consideration. Twenty-six students will be accepted. Applications can be obtained online at www.NativeScholars.org. For more information, to make a donation or volunteer, call (858) 688-2624.
