Fellowship Announcement

Application Deadline: March 31, 2004

Minority and Indigenous Fellows Program

The Biotechnology Institute invites you to apply for its five-day program that brings together minority and indigenous undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students and faculty from underrepresented-serving programs to experience firsthand what the biotechnology industry has to offer through workshops and activities prior to the BIO 2004 Convention and Exhibition.

All Fellows receive complimentary registration to the program and BIO 2004.

This year's program will take place in San Francisco, CA from June 4 - 9, 2004. Transportation to and from San Francisco, lodging, and meals will be paid for by the Biotechnology Institute. The application deadline is March 31, 2004.

Position Announcement:

The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., is seeking an individual to join its Education department as a Program Coordinator for the Museum's Cultural Interpreters.

The Education department supports a wide range of programs by and about Native Americans. Programs will serve both the general public and school audiences and will include gallery presentations, classroom workshops, demonstrations, electronic outreach and publications.

The Cultural Interpreters will lead gallery activities, tours and workshops for general Museum visitors as well as for students and teachers.

Applications will be reviewed in two rounds. The deadline for the first round is March 26, 2004. If a qualified candidate is not found, an additional round of applications will be considered. The deadline for the second round is May 10, 2004. Applications must be postmarked by the dates above to be considered.

This will be a permanent, Federal position. The salary range is $49,479--$59,302, commensurate with experience level.

The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian is seeking individuals to join its Education department as Cultural Interpreters for the Museum in Washington, D.C.

The Museum's Education department supports a wide range of programs by and about Native Americans. Programs will serve the general public and school audiences and will include gallery presentations, classroom workshops, demonstrations, outreach programs and publications.

The Interpreters will lead gallery activities, tours and workshops for the general visitors, students and teachers. Candidates should have skill and experience in teaching and public speaking (preferably in a museum or similar cultural institution) and a personal knowledge of and experience with Native American history and culture. Applicants for the Coordinator and Lead Interpreter positions should also have experience in program management and a schedule that permits a regular, rotating, weekend schedule.

Applications will be reviewed in two rounds. The deadline for the first round is March 26, 2004. Any unfilled positions will then be filled with applications postmarked before May 10, 2004.

Application procedures require submission of a resume and a cover letter with a specific description of how the candidate meets the position requirements.

Database/Research Librarian- (Bishop, CA)
The Owens Valley Career Development Center's Language Revitalization Programs, seeks a dynamic, service-oriented individual to play a key role on its resource services team. The database/research librarian assists with the day-to-day work of the language preservation team and bears specific responsibility for the overall quality control of the media and materials database. To carry out this mission, the database/research librarian will work with support staff performing database maintenance.

Coordinator of Second Language- (Bishop, CA)
The Nuumu Yadoha Language program is dedicated to preserving the various dialects of the Owens Valley Paiute Language and teaching them in a community setting. Under minimal supervision of the Nuumu Yadoha program director, the coordinator of second language acquisition will coordinate planning and curriculum development for the Language program. Applicants must have a BA or BS in Linguistics, Education, Anthropology or a related field with a documented emphasis in second language acquisition or language instruction. Under minimal supervision of the Executive Director, the Director of Family Literacy will plan, develop, and administer programs to support the academic, personal, and social development of youth and adults. The goal of this position is to enhance the educational success of the youth and adults being served, and to set the foundation for occupational success and self sufficiency. DEVELOPMENT POSITION

The Indian Law Resource Center, an international human rights advocacy organization based in Helena, Montana, seeks a fund raising development associate with excellent writing and communication skills. Attention to detail and the ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline are essential. A successful track record in the non-profit sector in a support role is a plus. This position requires extensive work with computer word processing and database programs. Experience with WordPerfect a plus. We are an equal opportunity employer offering an excellent salary plus benefits package. Position open until filled. Salary Range is $20,000 to 24,000 or higher plus benefits DOE.

We are also interested in more highly qualified persons to assume greater development responsibility at a higher salary range. Those with substantial experience in development are encouraged to apply.

Quality of Life & Health Promotion Grants

Deadlines: April 1 and October 1

The Reeve Paralysis Foundation provides more that $1 million annually in $5,000 to $25,000 Quality of Life and Health Promotion Grants to improve opportunities and quality of life for individuals living with disabilities-primarily paralysis-and their families. Quality of Life Grants support activities such as access, advocacy, education, recreation, and technology. Health Promotion Grants seek to remove societal and environmental barriers that limit the life activities of individuals with paralysis.

Grants Program

The American Express Foundation will grant a minimum of $500,000 in 2004 to fund financial literacy and education projects as part of its American Express Economic Independence Fund. This grants program is designed to support the delivery of financial literacy education to underserved adult segments of society, including the newly employed, young workers, individuals moving from welfare to work, and immigrants. The Fund is being administered jointly with the National Endowment for Financial Education.
