2004 SUMMER ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
HEADLANDS INDIAN HEALTH CAREERS

The Headland Indian Health Careers Program is an eight-week summer program (June 6 - July 31, 2004) designed to increase the science and mathematics backgrounds and communication skills of American Indian students interested in a health career and presently in their senior year of high school or freshman year of college. Applicants should have completed at least two years of algebra and two science courses and maintained at least a 2.50 GPA (B-/C+ average) in high school.

This academic enrichment and reinforcement program consists of mini-block courses in Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Communication and Writing Skills. Topics are presented in a series of lectures and laboratories, which are complemented with individual tutorials.

Participants receive: All expenses paid (room, board, and round trip airfare) and $500 stipend. The program will be held on the main campus of the University of Oklahoma in Norman.

Counselor positions are also available: College Upperclassmen and Health Professional Students will be selected to serve as dorm counselors, tutors, and role models for the participants. Counselors will be provided with free room and board during the eight week program as well as transportation costs and receive a $1,600.00 stipend.

WARNING: This is not a summer camp, it is an intensive and rigorous academic program. Participant will be expected to attend all classes and field trips, keep up with a rigorous schedule and large amounts of homework, and give a formal cultural presentation (speech) and write a term paper on their tribe.

Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science

SOARS is a four-year program for undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing careers in the atmospheric and related sciences. SOARS includes a 10-week summer program beginning in early June and continues through mid-August at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, or other national laboratory. Program participants (protégés) participate in ongoing research projects that may result in publishable papers and/or conference presentations. SOARS provides educational and research opportunities, mentoring, career counseling and guidance, and the possibility of financial support for a graduate-level program.

Program participants (protégés) work 40 hours a week and earn a competitive wage, which increases with each year of participation. Round-trip air fare is provided to summer working locations from anywhere within the United States and Puerto Rico. Protégés are provided furnished apartments at no cost to them and receive a regional bus pass that meets local transportation needs during the summer program. National Tribal Justice Resource Center

BJA's Tribal Courts Assistance Program (TCAP) is one of the U.S. Department of Justice's primary initiatives for providing court-related support to tribal justice systems. Since fiscal year (FY) 1999, BJA has awarded 224 grants through a highly competitive process.

The goal of TCAP is to develop new tribal courts, improve the operations of existing tribal courts, and provide funding for technical assistance and training of tribal court staff. The objective in reaching this goal is to help tribal governments develop, enhance, and continue operation of tribal judicial systems, including intertribal court systems.

The National Tribal Justice Resource Center has developed a resource webpage for the Tribal Court Assistance Program which include the grant solicitation, sample grant applications, sample job descriptions, a listing of federally recognized tribes and tribal populations, grant writing tools and resources, a link to the 2003 tribal court award recipients and a link to the BJA Tribal Court Grantee Intranet where you can search through TA Providers, previous grantees and their grant objectives, reporting forms and much more.

Program for pre-service Science Teachers

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the Department of Energy have a program for pre-service science teachers to participate in a 10-week science research internship at NREL in Golden, Colorado over the summer. This is a paid internship with many other perks and allowances. Please pass on this link to any teacher candidates that may be interested in participating in this exciting program (pre-service science, math, and technology teachers are eligible as undergraduate or graduate students). The program also offers weekly professional development opportunities and university credit.

Fee Waiver

Rutgers University is offering a fee waiver for all graduate applications by members of SACNAS. Applicants who apply on-line (recommended) should write "SACNAS fee waiver" in the text box section at the end of the application.
