MISSION
Merging traditional Lakota knowledge and culture with
state-of-the-art geo-spatial technology is the impetus behind
a $5 million NASA grant to Sinte Gleska University.
The
grant is designed to help university administrators and students
use geo-spatial data to benefit education, commerce, government
and communities in a cultural format.
"We
want to produce and develop products and processes that meet
the needs of our tribal decision makers," James Rattling
Leaf, land and natural resource developer for the Sicangu
Policy Institute at SGU, said.
The
award will aid in transforming data from earth-systems analyses
into products and information. That information can then be
used in forming land-management policies and community economic-development
projects.
The
project is a collaboration of SGU; the U.S. Geological Survey
Earth Resources Observation System, or EROS, Data Center of
Sioux Falls; Earth Satellite Corp.; and the NASA Ames Research
Center.
