Kid KoalaSix Canadian groups and artists are flew to Europe this week, on a three-week tour of key festivals of world music thanks to an initiative undertaken by the Canada Council for the Arts.

Kid Koala, Tanya Tagaq Gillis and Michel Deveau, Alpha Yaya Diallo, Zubot and Dawson, Tasa and Les Batinses were selected in a national competition organized by the Canada Council for professional Canadian folk and world musicians. The tour will take them to ten festivals, including several in Germany, as well as Holland, Austria and Switzerland.

Sonic Weave is a promotional performance of the best in contemporary Canadian folk and world music. The selected artists present an overview of the talent, diversity and scope of these musical forms created in Canada. The tour will help make Canadian musicians better known to markets and audiences outside the country and will interest media, distributors, and European audiences in what is being done by professional Canadian musicians.

"Sonic Weave is a fantastic opportunity to show European audiences the Canadian sound in folk and world music: a uniquely original sound shaped by the multiple cultural and linguistic influences that define Canada today," said Sandra Bender, Market Development Coordinator for the Outreach Office and organizer of the Sonic Weave tour. "These six groups and artists are perfect for giving an overview of a diversified, dynamic Canadian culture."

The European tour is a coproduction between the Canada Council and Tradition & Moderne GmbH. This German company devoted to folk, jazz and world music is both a recording company and a festival as well as a tour organizer, and will be responsible for the tour’s promotional campaign in Europe. The company has been promoting Canadian artists in Europe for fifteen years, including the likes of Holly Cole, Lucie Idlout, Kiran Ahluwhalia, Tri-Continental and Veda Hille.

Upon the artists' return from Europe, Zubot and Dawson and Kid Koala will begiving a concert as part of the Governor General's Summer Concert Series at Rideau Hall on July 20, 2003, at 4 p.m.

Selection process
The six groups and artists were selected from among 284 candidates. Applications were assessed by a group of Canadian promoters, producers and media programmers. All applications were evaluated on the basis of the artistic merit of the musicians’ work, in a national comparative context. A pre-selection was made and the successful applicants were chosen based on the final recommendation made by the Canadian peer assessment committee in consultation with European partners.

General information
This initiative of the Outreach Office and the Music Section of the Canada Council comes under the Council’s strategy to advance the career of Canadian world music artists. In 1998, the Canada Council coordinated the Showcase of Culturally Diverse and First Peoples Music Artists and it organized Native to Canada: Showcase of Aboriginal Musicians at WOMEX 2000 to promote aboriginal artists and give them an opportunity to tour nationally and internationally.
