Indian Students Honored |
|
Sacajawea Elementary student Joshua
Doney was not a perfect student. The 9-year-old used to fight with other
children and used foul language. Thursday night he was given a certificate for most-improved behavior. About 200 students, family members and friends gathered in the Longfellow Elementary School gym for the 22nd annual Indian Education Awards. "We are all here for one true reason, to pay recognition and to pay tribute to these wonderful children," said Cece Hofland, school-to-home facilitator, as he addressed the audience. Native American children attending local schools from elementary through high school were commended for their academic efforts ranging from achieving excellence in grades and attendance to improvements in behavior and concentration. "He has really changed," said Joshua's mother, Shawna Doney, 27. The award "means a lot to him." West Elementary School student Krystyn Blackbird was given the best all-around student award. She said she likes school and listed art, computers, writing and stories as her favorite things. Cathy Blackbird, Krystyn's mother, said her 7-year-old "gets straight A's and is eager to learn." Verona Bearchild said she got her award for the most-improved in math "because it's easy." Verona, 10, said she is working
