Award-Winning Teacher Says Education Crosses Ethnic Boundaries

A member of Montana's Blackfeet Tribe honored for his work as a Helena High School English teacher says education was the common strand as he learned to live by both Indian and white ways.

Joe Anderson said his own education meant both learning native dancing and drumming and getting a master's degree.

"The bottom line is that native people have the ability to be doctors, nurses, attorneys, anything they want to be," said Anderson, named a Teacher of the Year by the Montana-Wyoming Indian Education Association during its recent meeting in Helena.

The group gave a second Teacher of the Year award to Thelma Bear Medicine of Browning's K.W. Bergan School. Dorothy Still Smoking, the Browning School District's Blackfeet Native American studies director, was named Educator of the Year.

Anderson, who has taught at Helena for almost three decades, said introducing a Native American literature class was something he did only recently. Even with the specialization, Anderson said he doesn't focus on the ethnic aspects of the writings as much he does on the humanity that all good stories have.

Poplar School Gets Radio Station

POPLAR -- The Poplar High School has a new radio station, making it the only known high school radio station in northeastern Montana, the Wotanin Wowapi reported.

It took two years to become a reality, but FM 96.9 KPLR-LP will air from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. from the Poplar High School.

The noncommercial station will play school news and a variety of county music during the day and contemporary rock in the late afternoon and evening.

The Lunch Box music show will air during the noon hour, and the Ride Home airs from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

By next fall, KPLR expects to broadcast all of Poplar High School's sporting events.

The new station wouldn't have been possible without the help of former Poplar School Superintendent Ivan Small, who raised grant money and helped get the license, radio disc jockey Mike Gorder told the Wotanin.
