Kimberly TallBear
receives National Science Foundation Fellowship: |
||
Kimberly TallBear, a member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, has been awarded a three-year fellowship by the National Science Foundation. The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent agency of the U.S. Government. Its mission is "to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; and to secure the national defense". Ms. TallBear is a second year Ph.D. student at the University of California Santa Cruz in the History of Consciousness Program. She is doing research on how American Indian people think about biological concepts (such as blood and genes) to determine kin and community belonging and how this might influence tribal policy-making. NSF seeks to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, mathematics, and engineering in the United States and to reinforce its diversity. NSF Graduate Fellowships offer recognition and three years of support for advanced study to approximately 900 outstanding graduate students each year in the mathematical, physical, biological, engineering, and behavioral and social sciences, including the history of science and the philosophy of science, and to research-based PhD degrees in science education. Kimberly is the daughter of Lee Ann TallBear of Sisseton, SD. |
