New Fund to Benefit Students

The American Indian College Fund has announced a new college fund established in honor of Army Pfc. Lori Piestewa, believed to be the first American Indian woman killed in combat.

Piestewa, a Hopi Indian from Tuba City, Ariz., died in southern Iraq. She was a single mother with two children, ages 4 and 3.

The new fund will help pay for college for Piestewa's children, with any remaining funds used to provide an annual scholarship to a tribal college or university for a female Indian military veteran.

In a news release, the American Indian College Fund said it will designate all donations from its own employees over the next five years to the Lori Piestewa Memorial Scholarship Fund, plus use other organizational money for a one-time match of as much as $2,000 for those employee contributions.

Richard B. Williams, president and CEO of the American Indian College Fund, said the idea for the fund came from the organization's own employees. The fund isn't actively seeking contributions from the general public but will accept outside donations made in Piestewa's name.

Established in 1989, the American Indian College Fund helps increase educational opportunities for Indian students. The fund supports more than 6,000 students each year and also supports endowments and developmental needs at the nation's tribal colleges.
