Students participate in geography challenge |
|
A student from Iqaluit is representing Nunavut at an online geography championship this weekend. Sara Kerr (sp) will compete against seven other students from the Northwest Territories and the Yukon. Only one will go on to the national championship on May 24. Yukon teacher Dashan Cortello is helping to organize the Great Canadian Geography Challenge. She says the students have been practicing and the questions aren't easy. "Oh my, they are really difficult. I always find that I learn a lot of things as well. Let's see. Name a city that starts with a D in the country of Senegal in Africa? That was a tough one." The Great Canadian Geography Challenge is a yearly event for students under 16 years old. For the first time this year, competitors will take their test over the Internet. They will log on at the same time and click on the answers to the multiple choice test. Students at Joamie School in Iqaluit have also participated in the geography challenge. Mannasie Kandal from Grade 5 and Ayer Abusherwashi from Grade 4 were the school winners. Friday

Samish, Swinomish donate to local school library |

ANACORTES, Wash. - The Samish Nation donated 63 books on American Indian history and culture to the Whitney School Library in Anacortes. The Swinomish Casino answered a librarian and student's request for money for books with a donation of $1,000. This filled the need for non-fiction Native American history books, which the library was lacking. "It's a tremendous asset," Principal Lance Gibbon said of improvement, "to what we had. These are beautiful books and will provide our students with all the more meaningful exposure to different cultures." |
