POSITION AVAILABLE:
SUMMER GRADUATE INTERNSHIP AT THE BENTON FOUNDATION

The Benton Foundation is seeking a qualified intern at the graduate student level to work part-time at our office in downtown Washington DC. The paid internship would commence in early June and would run a minimum of 12 weeks.

Primary duties:

  • Assist in the publication of Benton's daily online news-service, Communications-Related Headlines (http://www.benton.org/News). Intern would research daily news publications, summarize relevant stories and post summaries to the Internet.
  • Assist in the publication of the Digital Divide Network (http://www.digitaldividenetwork.org), which focuses on digital divide issues in the United States, and its international sister site, the Digital Opportunity Channel (http://www.digitalopportunity.org). Intern duties would include researching, collecting and posting of articles and Web resources, as well as writing articles profiling digital divide initiatives and related issues.  

Secondary duties:

Assist in other programmatic activities, including periodic maintenance of the Benton.org website, research and writing of Benton reports and publications, attending and summarizing FCC and congressional hearings and assisting in the organizing of meetings and conferences.

Research Project:

The intern would also be expected to propose, develop and complete a major research project over the course of the internship. Sample projects might revolve around identifying sustainability strategies in community technology initiatives; creating a portfolio of articles analyzing the diversity of media outlets in a set of communities, or contrasting different strategies for bringing 21st century skills to at-risk youth; publishing a major policy paper delving into an emerging communications policy issue, etc.

Education, Skills and Qualifications:

  • Graduate-level student
  • Knowledge and interest in communications policy issues (the digital divide, 21st century skills, media ownership, edtech, etc.)
  • Excellent writing and editorial skills (experience with AP writing style a plus)
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work with limited supervision
  • Ability to meet daily deadlines and work under pressure
  • PC and Internet literacy
  • Basic knowledge of HTML and online publishing

Journalism experience is preferred, though not required.  

The intern would be expected to work a minimum of 20 hours/week, and morning hours (9am-12pm EST) are required. Candidates must be able to work out of our Washington DC office for a majority of their weekly working hours; part-time local telecommuting will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The Benton Foundation will not be able to pay for candidates relocating to the DC area.

American Indian Education Summer 2003 (July) Course Offering

AIE 380  "Child Abuse/Neglect and the Law" (Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m.-5 p.m., July 7-11*, 2003).

This course is designed for both educators and health and human services providers. It includes defining and identifying child abuse/neglect, and addresses the question, "What constitutes ‘reasonable suspicion’ of abuse for mandated reporters?" The ethics, practice, and underlying theory of child abuse prevention, early recognition, intervention, and treatment will be covered, as well as mandated reporting, the Indian Child Welfare Act, and other legal issues. Multiple responders’ perspectives will be introduced, including those of tribal governments and communities, county social services agencies, local law enforcement agencies, judicial systems, and foster care providers.

Instructor: Susan C. Cameron, Ph.D.
Dr. Susan Cameron, nationally renowned in cross-cultural counseling and multicultural education holds a PhD in Counselor Education from the Purdue University.
