(April
2, 2003) The Anadarko Warriors became the Champions of Class 4A High School
Basketball when they defeated Piedmont by a score of seventy-four to sixty-seven. Andarko
High School has a long and successful history in High School Basketball,
but it has been 28 years since they have proudly hoisted a State Championship
Trophy in the air. The
Warriors did it with a tremendous team that included five elite starters,
starters who have basketball savvy and are all Native American. "We
got off to a really good start," said Head Coach Doug Schumpert about
the Championship game. "But I knew it wasn't going to last forever,
Piedmont is too good for that." But Piedmont Head Coach Butch Burton
was well aware of the strength Anadarko had. "To tell you the truth,"
said Burton, "I dont' think it was anything that we didn't
do, Anadarko was just playing great basketball." The
Warriors did start the game red-hot, Cameron Yeahquo was the 3-point specialist,
as well as Damon Nimsey and Jeremy Hunter. Hunter, who is a senior and
is listed at 6'2, would start the first quarter without missing a basket.
Hunter would go on to score 20 points in the first half and end the game
with a team-high of 29 points. Team-wise, the Warriors cruised to
a 17-2 lead and after eight minutes in the contest held a 24-8 advantage. But
the game was far from over with Piedmont who challenged the Warriors every
step of the way. Eventually climbing back into the game and taking the
lead late in the game. The lead would change twice before Anadarko, thanks
to Yeahquo who made a crucial fourth quarter shot while drawing the foul.
Of all the key elements to this Championship game, Schumpert points to
Yeahquo's late play specifically as critical. "That was easily the
play of the game," said Schumpert. Cameron just kept working and
finally got it to go. He's been doing that all year." Yeahquo would
also finish the game strong with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Schumpert,
who is in his third year of coaching, points to a disciplined team that
"seemed to get better with each practice and each game." The
Warriors would finish the season with 26 wins and only 3 losses. Anadarko
would also claim the Southern Plains Conference Championship, and the
Mid First Warrior Classic Tournament as well as District, Regional and
Area Championships. In fact, since the end of January the Warriors have
been the tops of Class 4A with a number 1 ranking. Those
starters include: Jeremy Hunter-Kiowa, Cameron Yeahquo-Kiowa/Wichita,
Damon Nimsey-Wichita, Adam Parker-Kiowa/Comanche, and Derrick Lorentz-Wichita.
For his performance in the Championship game, Hunter would go on to claim the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, "I know I just wanted to win," said Hunter referring to the Warriors State Championship Trophy.
