	Southern Academic Program for Nunavummiut Expanding

A program that brings Nunavummiut to Ottawa to introduce them to southern-style academic life is expanding. Nunavut Sivuniksavut has announced it will be adding a second year to its program. The second year will be a pilot project that will allow students to build on what they learned in their first year.

Since 1985 the program has packed a lot of leaning into one year. Students study their homeland and take a look at the Nunavut land claim agreement in detail. Most importantly it's a chance for students to wet their feet in a southern academic environment. The course instructor, Morley Hanson, says students were saying they wanted more.

"The topics that they're studying in this first year are compelling to them and they know that they're just scratching the surface in many areas."

Hanson says students have been saying that they also wanted a little more time to become accustomed to living and going to school in the south. He says students in the new second year will have an opportunity to take university or college courses while still getting support from their program instructors. It's a change that Sandra Inutik calls awesome. She's a graduate of the program and is currently studying law at Arctic College in Iqaluit. She says she's envious of those who will be participating in the second year.

"I don't know if an extra year would have made a difference in terms of, I guess, cutting the umbilical cord to the north or not. I probably would have been more comfortable if it had been another year."

The second year will be made up of students who are currently in the first year of the program. But students who have already graduated will also be given an opportunity to take the second year.
