Eighth-grader gets help on way to college |
|
An eighth-grader who is away at boarding school on the Navajo Reservation in Chinle may be going to college, thanks to Radio Tri-Color, a Spanish-language radio station, and Fulton Homes' pilot program, "Building Futures." Verlena Jo Tso was picked because of her ability to rise above difficulties. "Life on the reservation is tough for anyone, yet her grade-point average is a 3.8 and she has shown leadership ability as a team captain in three sports," said Carrie Strait of Radio Tri-Color. The pilot program was created to help junior high students fulfill their dreams of going to college. Struggling American Indian school now faces overhaul |
|
A struggling Minneapolis school designed to help American Indian students succeed could become the city's fourth school to undergo a "fresh start." Responding to community pressure to reinvest in the school, Superintendent Carol Johnson recommended overhauling Four Winds American Indian Magnet School for fall 2003. She made her pitch at a school board discussion meeting Tuesday. The term "fresh start" is used by the district to refer to its most drastic approach to fixing a school. It includes replacing the principal, revamping the academic program and having all staff members reapply for their jobs. Under Johnson's plan, Four Winds would return to its original focus on strong academics coupled with American Indian languages and culture -- a move that several American Indian leaders have been pushing for for some time. The new and improved magnet program would move from its current site at 2300 Chicago Av. S. to a district building at 2225 E. Lake St and would serve about 175 students in grades K-8. A smaller community school would remain at the current location and would serve elementary students living near the school. |
