Hopi High Graduate Ruby Beatty Reigns as Miss Haskell |

Beatty, who was known for her basketball prowess at Hopi High, is the reigning Miss Haskell. Besides
wearing the crown, as Miss Haskell she gives speeches at various conferences
and represents the college at different events. She also gives visitors
tours of the college. Beatty, a junior at Haskell in Lawrence, Kan., is majoring in environmental science. She hopes to become an athletic trainer. She is taking the required classes right now. After she leaves Haskell, she hopes to attend Northern Arizona University or Kansas University. Beatty,
who maintains a B-average, said Hopi High School did a good job of preparing
her for her college studies. She played basketball the past two years
at Haskell, but she is focusing on her studies this year. Beatty enjoys Haskell. "It's a great college because you get to meet other Indians. Plus, Kansas University is right across the road, but classes are tough here just like any college," she said. While attending Hopi High School, Beatty served as the student council president. She was also active in National Junior Honor Society and Gifted and Talented. She also ran for the girls state championship cross country team. "I miss Hopi Junior/Senior High School because it's like home. I was used to all the people and teachers. At first when I went to college, I missed home, but I'm becoming used to it. I want to encourage everybody to work hard on their goals. The more you work, the easier life will be for you when you get out of college," she said. Beatty said she enjoyed her high school years and encourages Hopi High School students to do the same. "I enjoyed the home cooked meals because when you're at college you don't get that," she said. She
is the daughter of Ernestine Beatty. Her grandmother is Effie Beatty
of Polacca.
