Traditional Navajo Hogan Dedicated At NAU Flagstaff, Ariz. (AP) _ A traditional wooden, eight-walled Navajo hogan is one of the newest additions to Northern Arizona University. The structure, which is made from logs taken from forest thinning and wildfire hazard reduction programs in Arizona, was dedicated during a ceremony Friday. It contains a dirt floor and a wood-burning stove. It will be used for meetings, lectures and other ceremonies involving several departments including the School of Forestry. "We need to turn back to the past and the teachings of our ancestors in order to live in harmony and balance," said Jocelyn Billy, a student who participated in the dedication ceremonies. Ronald Trosper, director of the Native American Forestry Program, said the university was lucky to have the structure. "Its presence symbolizes the university's support for Native Americans," Trosper said. |
