Talented Native Runners Sought |

 Wings
of America is searching for the most promising Junior, Middle, and High
School Cross Country runners in Indian Country for sponsorship to their
respective Foot Locker Cross Country Championships Regional Race.
In 1988, a Britishman, by the name of William Channing, was spending the evening with one of his Hopi friends, in Arizona. Since, the climate was warm, he followed a popular tradition of sleeping on the roof. He awoke early in the morning and watched his friend’s daughter go out for a morning run. Channing wanted to help keep the tradition of Native American running alive. Channing would hear about a Cross Country Championship in Raleigh, North Carolina to be held later that year. What a unique opportunity for Native American runners, he thought. With that, he and his friends would raise money for Indian Children between the ages of 14 to 19 to compete in this event, called The Athletic Conference National Cross-Country Championships, which would be later changed to the U.S.A. Track and Field Championships. The runners, that consisted of members of the Hopi, Navajo, and Pueblo Tribes, were competing against experienced runners from colleges. Regardless, they won the National Team Championships. 'Wings of America' was born, and has sought the best runners in Native American Youth ever since. In 1998, Footlocker, inc. came on board to help sponsor the championships by creating the Footlocker Cross Country Championships Regional Races. Assistance is offered for travel and race related expenses for five runners from each of the four-Foot Locker regions: Midwest, Northeast, South and West. The Midwest, Northeast, and South will be held on November 30, while the West regional will be held on December 7. Sponsorship of runners to the Foot Locker Regionals is part of the competitive program of 'Wings of America.' Following the Foot Locker Regionals, runners will be selected, depending on regional performance, for the Wings National Cross Country Championship in Houston, Texas on February 15-16, of next year. Student athletes involved in the ‘Wings of America’ competitve program will be invited to participate in the youth development programs, including leadership training, running, and fitness camps.
