Native Thunder Distance Runners Prepare for First Marathon |
||
editors note: This just in ... All
runners completed the Twin Cities Marathon. Congratulations!
|
ONAMIA, MN The all-American Indian running group, Native Thunder Distance Runners, is coming to the close of its training program in preparation for its inaugural marathon run in the Twin Cities Marathon on September 29, 2002. The running group, which is based on the Mille Lacs Reservation in central Minnesota, hopes to inspire other Indian runners to reclaim the athletic heritage of their People. | ||

Founded this past May, the Native Thunder Distance Runners has members from the Mille Lacs and White Earth Bands of Ojibwe, the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians, Alaska Native, Hopi, Blackfeet and Cherokee tribes. All of the members reside in Minnesota and range from a college student, chemist, engineer, to attorneys and other professionals. Half of the group is women, and with the exception of one runner, all will be running their first marathon. In addition to participating in this marathon and other racing events, the group hopes to inspire other American Indians, particularly the youth, to become physically active, learn the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, and begin an inter-tribal fitness movement. Indians today are afflicted with higher rates of many health problems, including diabetes and high blood pressure, than other American populations. For instance, research indicates that more than one in three adults living on Minnesotas Indian reservations will be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes during his or her lifetime. This rate is four times higher than that for the states general population. The nine-member group will run in red shirts at the Twin Cities Marathon and welcomes the publics support. The group is looking for new American Indian members to join them in future races.
