LSI 7th graders establish the Colts News Flash

by By S.J. Wilson - The Navajo-Hopi Observer

The Colts News Flash staffStudents and staff of Little Singer Inc. (LSI) charter school have their own newsletter. The Colts News Flash is the product of LSI’s seventh grade class, headed by teacher Stefan Vest.

The first issue, released this month, features seven pages of news, photographs, drawings and student writing.

Vest and his class invited Navajo-Hopi Observer reporter S.J. Wilson to visit their classroom to peruse their first offering, to share some of her insights and to answer student questions.

The questions were well-thought out, and reflected the students’ interest in the world of journalism.

Within the seven pages of the first issue, released earlier this month, students share school news, their writing and drawings, a Colts fall sports schedule and a letter from a staff member.

One employee interview, by Daraina Jackson and Shantelle Yazzie, honors “one of the best employees of Little Singer Community School.” Her name is Roberta Begay, and she has been an employee of LSI for the past eight years.

Begay is a teaching assistant for the seventh and eighth grade, an LSI parent and a member of the Parent Advisory Committee.

The school is located in the community of Birdsprings about 14 miles east of Leupp.
