Inukshuk by Ken KirkbyIQALUIT, Nunavut (September 27, 2002) - Jack Anawak, Minister of Culture, Language, Elders and Youth (CLEY), has unveiled the new Inuktitut flash cards for pre-schoolers at the Inukshuk Infant Development Centre in Iqlauit.

These cards will be distributed to all daycares across Nunavut as part of CLEY's contribution to Literacy Week, which takes place between September 30 and October 4, 2002.

As part of CLEY's mandate to preserve and promote the active use of Inuktitut, the flash cards were designed using bright colours and pictures to make learning Inuktitut easy and fun for pre-schoolers.

"It is especially important to keep the Inuktitut language alive and to ensure our youth can speak and read their language." said Minister Anawak. "Our hopes for the future health of Inuktitut lie with our youth. We must foster the development of our language among those who will be speaking it in the future."

Last year CLEY awarded $420,856 in grants and contributions to non-profit community based organizations and individuals for the promotion/preservation of the Inuktitut/Innuinaqtun language.
