NTI pushes for more
Inuktitut schooling
|
Iqaluit, Nunavut - Nunavut's powerful land claims organization plans to pressure the territorial government to increase native language teaching in schools. Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated wants Inuktitut and Inuinaqtun to be taught from Kindergarten to grade 12. Board members say they have to push the Nunavut government to take a stronger approach towards language education in the schools. In most communities children are taught in Inuktitut until Grade 4. Schooling then continues in English. NTI's Social and Cultural department says in order to preserve and promote the two languages, it should be taught in every grade. Board members say because it is not, young people in the territory are losing their ability to speak and understand Inuktitut. The Social and Cultural department points to Greenland as an example of where the language is taught in all grades. The board says it will now work to get the Nunavut government to do the same. It says government is not doing enough to make sure Inuktitut and Inuinaqtun survive in the future. |
