Peggy was raised in Eagle River, Alaska. She is Inupiaq, Eskimo, and often visits the small village of Ambler, Alaska, where her mother was raised, and much of her family still lives. She is a twenty-two year old student pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Nursing at the University of Anchorage, Alaska. She has been honored to receive the Indian Health Services Scholarship Award for the past two years. IHS is a national scholarship in which her tuition is paid for and she receives monthly stipends. She is an active member of Recruitment and Retention of Alaska Natives into Nursing (RRANN), through the university. She has been an intern at the Alaska Native Medical Center through Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium for the past two summers, and will return once again for the summer of 2002. Now that Peggy has won the title of Miss Alaska she will continue on to compete in the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey. She plans on taking her traditional Eskimo dance to nationals as her talent. She will spend her year of service promoting her platform, "Cultural Awareness" speaking to the youth about the cultural barriers that exist throughout the state of Alaska.
