Tribe's Golf Tournament to Aid Reading Program |

 BEAUMONT
- A San Bernardino school district program that promotes reading among
young children will be getting help from putters during an Aug. 26 charity
golf tournament.
Proceeds from the fourth annual San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino Charity Golf Tournament will benefit the City of Readers program. The program, founded in 1997, encourages reading for fun and information through the use of tutors, family reading festivals, spelling contests and other means. Money from the sponsored event could be used to produce a fourth series of the Family Storytime Show, videotaped half-hour episodes possibly featuring San Manuel officials reading stories, said Sheri Becar, facilitator for City of Readers. "There are all kinds of things that we
can do," she said. The tournament will be held at the Oak Valley Golf Club at 1888 Golf Club Drive, Beaumont. A community outreach committee for San Manuel chose City of Readers as the recipient of tournament proceeds after considering a number of other organizations that were nominated, said Jill Eaton, director of tribal communications for the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, which operates the Highland-based casino. The committee is made up of eight to 10 San Manuel employees who volunteer their time. Tournament proceeds have previously been donated to various charities and nonprofits, including Option House and Indian Child and Family Services, Eaton said. The committee has also organized food, clothes and toy drives and feed-the-homeless efforts, she said. "I'm really proud of the tremendous work the committee has done and is doing," said Ron Mastandrea, casino general manager. "It's an inspiration to all of us and an example of how people can really make a difference when they help others." Becar said she was contacted by San Manuel officials earlier this year to make a presentation on the City of Readers program and to indicate how it could benefit from the proceeds. City of Readers has previously produced three series of the Family Storytime Show. Becar said they pitched the idea of including San Manuel representatives as guest readers with books related to the tribe. "The books would have to do with the Band of Mission Indians and heighten awareness of what they're doing and their issues," she said.
