Computer network to hook up Navajo Head Start classrooms

WINDOW ROCK, AZ. The Department of Head Start has contracted with OnSat Network Communications Inc. of Salt Lake City to connect all 205 Head Start classrooms and 34 Administrative Head Start facilities throughout the Navajo Nation. "Without digging a single ditch or laying any cable, our totally wireless network will connect our entire organization," said J. Kaibah Begay, director of Head Start. "We will streamline the administrative workload of Head Start, improve information sharing, provide filtered Internet connections, video conferences and deliver many new distance learning opportunities for our children, families, parent committee members and staff." OnSat Network Communications Inc. also currently provides the satellite Internet connection to more than 105 Navajo Nation Chapter Houses funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. "Head Start is connecting their 205 Head Start classrooms wirelessly to the local Chapter House satellite systems. This is a most efficient and cost effective method of acquiring a computer network system throughout the entire Navajo Nation. What would have taken years will take less than 90 days," David Stephens, CEO of OnSat said. The project is being implemented in two phases. The first phase will be the installation of six major uplink satellite systems at the central administration and five agency offices which will serve as hubs for the entire wireless computer network system. The second phase will connect all the Head Start facilities to the local Chapter House. The anticipated date of completion of the entire project is the end of August or early September.
