Iqaluit
Student Wins National Scholarship
|
A high-school student from Nunavut is one of the 20 recipients from across the country who won a large scholarship. Shawn (sp) Doherty (sp) of Iqaluit has won the Toronto Dominion-Canada Trust Scholarship for Outstanding Community Leadership and Involvement. He's a Grade 12 student at Inuksuk high school. It's the first time anyone in the north has received the scholarship. The four-year scholarship is worth up to $50,000. Doherty received the award for his marks at school and his active volunteer involvement. He says volunteering is a good way to help the community and help yourself to grow in strength and experience. "I think it's very important. I think you get a lot and you help a lot of people by volunteering. You get skills that you may not get just by working at a job and you get the feeling that you're making a difference. And that's really important to feel that you're a part of the community. And it's also important to help people." Shawn (sp) Doherty (sp) will start work on his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Guelph in Ontario this fall. |
