Imagine what Indian-ed programs could do with funding By percentage, the number of Indian students in the Cascade County public schools is slightly below the statewide average. But in raw numbers, schools here are attended by more students of Native American heritage -- about 1,200 -- than the reservation schools of Browning, Rocky Boy's, Harlem or Poplar. In fact, that 1,200 represents a significant portion of the Indian students statewide -- about 7.5 percent. That alone would justify making Indian history, culture and language a part of the local schools' curriculum. http://www.greatfallstribune.com/news/stories/20011211/opinion/1303545.html |

Grant to help Indian students LOGAN Uintah Basin, the Uintah School District and the Northern Band of the Ute Tribe have been awarded a $240,000 collaborative grant to train educators who work with American Indian students in public schools. Guy Denton, director of the Utah State University's Uintah Basin campus, said students from the Northern Band of the Ute Tribe face overwhelming risk factors, including high poverty, high unemployment, disease and illiteracy in both English and Ute. More than 90 percent of the youths qualify for the free and reduced lunch program. More than 67 percent have been identified as being limited English proficient. The grant will fund the ASPIRE
(All Staff Pledge to Inspire Respect and Educate) program, Denton
said. Developed by the U.S. Department of Education, the program involves
supervised field experience and courses coordinated with educators'
work schedules, provided on-site. http://www.deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,355012602,00.html? |
