 Wright Receives Milken Educator Award

 by Char-Koosta News

Wilhemina Wright, Arlee High School government and Native American studies teacher, had a very good day on Oct. 11.

In a special mystery assembly, the unsuspecting Wright was told by State Superintendent Linda McCulloch, that she had been selected to receive the 2001 Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award, which comes with a no-strings-attached $25,000 prize.

"We are here today to honor Wilhemina Wright for her dedication to the quality education of Arlee students," McCulloch said in announcing the award. "It is only appropriate that I make this announcement at the school in which she has made so many contributions."

Wright was selected to receive the award along with two other Montana educators. Candidates may not apply for the award themselves, nor can they be nominated. Montana candidates for the award program were identified by the Office of Public Instruction, based on their exemplary commitment to excellence, including the ability to motivate students, innovation in curricula or teaching methods, exemplary use of technology, and success in attracting and supporting quality teachers. Names of top candidates were provided to a selection panel, which chose the award recipients and recommended them to McCulloch.

McCulloch also announced that Paul Swenson of Billings West High School and Jennifer Royall of Bozeman Sacajawea Middle School, were also chosen to receive the Milken Educator Award. "Each one of these outstanding educators from the State of Montana, makes a significant difference in the lives and futures of your children," McCulloch. "This marks our ninth year of recognizing excellence in education with the Milken Family Foundation, and we are proud of the vision and dedication these educators bring to the profession."

Superintendent McCulloch and foundation officials will join in recognizing the three Montana honorees at a December luncheon in Helena. In addition, each recipient receives an all-expense-paid trip to Los Angeles in June 2002 for participation in the annual Milken Family Foundation National Education Conference with the winners from 44 participating states. They also become part of the Milken Educator Network, a group of more than 1,700 top educators who have access to variety of professional resources to help cultivate and expand innovative programs in their classrooms, schools, and districts. The $25,000 will be presented at the conference.

The Santa Monica, California-based Milken Family Foundation was established in 1982 to discover and advance inventive and effective ways of helping people help themselves and those around them lead productive and satisfying lives, primarily through medical research and education. The Milken National Educator Awards is the nation's largest teacher recognition program, established in 1985.
