Indian studies program added

URBANA - The University of Illinois is gaining a program in American Indian studies.

Students and researchers at the Urbana campus will be able to avail themselves of the resources and faculty of all Big Ten universities, the University of Chicago and Chicago´s Newberry Library.

The first hire, the program director, will work out of the UI-Chicago campus, but Urbana will have access as part of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, a consortium headquartered in Champaign.

The consortium´s executive director, Barbara Allen, said the new curriculum will be "the strongest program in American Indian studies in this country."

"We believe scholars across the nation will see this as (a) beacon of scholarship that will invigorate the field," she said.

The Newberry Library has one of the largest collections of Native American artifacts in the world, and the one or two professors at each of the 12 universities will comprise a formidable faculty, Allen said.

Researchers will have access to each other´s collections. Students and faculty will be able to attend seminars and presentations at a variety of venues.

Allen said there would eventually be classes on the Urbana campus to go with distance learning opportunities.
