ABC Network Executives Visit Mille Lacs in Search of New Talent

ONAMIA, Minn. - ABC recently announced that it will offer a Mille Lacs Band member the opportunity to participate in its New Talent Development Scholarship Grant Program, which includes $20,000 to complete a writing, directing or filmmaking project. ABC representatives shared information about the program with Minnesota tribal officials and minority organizations during a recent meeting at Grand Casino Mille Lacs.

ABC began the New Talent Development Program last year to support and nurture individuals from ethnically diverse backgrounds who want to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. It is a pilot program which provides a select group of these talented people with the guidance and resources they need to begin an entertainment career. The program is being marketed this year in Minnesota and five other states as well as Washington, D.C.

"ABC is thrilled to be working alongside the Mille Lacs Band in our ongoing efforts to seek out and nurture new creative talent," said Carmen J. Smith, Vice President of New Talent Programs for ABC, Inc. "These efforts will serve as a template for future outreach efforts with other American Indian groups."

The Mille Lacs Band will hold a competition among Band members who are aspiring writers, directors and filmmakers, with applications being accepted from September 2001 through January 2002. ABC will announce the winner from the Band in June 2002. This person will be mentored by a creative executive from the ABC network family for one year beginning in the fall of 2002. Most mentoring will take place over the phone or Internet so that the Band member can remain at home, while other mentoring may take place in person in California, New York, or another location.

"This is a very unique career opportunity for Mille Lacs Band members," said Rick Anderson, liaison for the ABC New Talent Development Program and project coordinator of the ABC talent competition for the Mille Lacs Band. "The Band is grateful to ABC for seeking out new talent among its Band members and encouraging people to pursue their career goals and visions."
