Putting the Movement Back Into Civil Rights Teaching The Network of Educators on the Americas (NECA) and the Poverty & Race Research Action Council (PRRAC) invite you to submit materials for Putting the Movement Back Into Civil Rights Teaching, a K-12 teaching guide, to be followed by a series of professional development institutes. Taught as a multifaceted people’s struggle for social justice, the Civil Rights Movement can help students develop a critical analysis of racism and resistance by enabling them to understand their role in implementing social change. The publication will explore citizenship, education and labor issues, analyzing the Movement through perspectives relating to youth, women, culture, organizing, institutional racism and other social movements (national & international). It will describe how the Movement involved thousands of people and organizations, not merely a few exceptional leaders. In addition, it will demonstrate the relationship between the historical Civil Rights Movement and modern activism. We seek interactive, interdisciplinary, participatory and academically rigorous lessons written from a critical perspective. All submissions should include handouts (readings, graphics, and/or interviews). In appreciation for materials selected for inclusion we will offer $100 and a free copy of the publication. Authors will be credited in the book and hold copyrights for their text. We hope that you will join us in our effort to create this dynamic publication. Submit materials ASAP. A Mescalero Milestone The Mescalero Apache Tribe and Centex Construction Company are celebrating a milestone in the construction of the new $33.5 million K-12 school in Mescalero, N.M. The new school's structure is complete and a traditional construction topping out ceremony will be held on Oct. 1, 2001 at the new school's site on White Mountain Drive. Sara Misquez, president of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, and Jason Harper, project manager for Centex, will host the luncheon festivities in the school's new cafeteria. The 218,000-square-foot school represents more than just a new educational facility; it represents the Tribe members' dedication and commitment to the community and securing their future. The Mescalero Apache Tribe is the only community on the Bureau of Indian Affairs Educational Facilities Replacement Listing to start building a school with its own funds before Federal funding is available. "Children are the future of this Tribe.
