	Kids Use Inuit Values to Try to Quit Smoking

CAMBRIDGE BAY, NUNAVUT - Kids aged thirteen to sixteen in Cambridge Bay are going to try a new way to kick a bad habit. A group of ten teenagers are going out on the land for a seven-day camping trip without cigarettes. Fifteen year old Clarissa Koblogina has been smoking for four years. She says she's anxious to quit. "I'm looking forward to this because I want to quit smoking. I tried the nicoderm, but it didn't work. It's a bad habit. It gets you into bad shape. It ruins your health and takes your future away." She's going to register in the smoke-free land trip this week. According to a 1999 Government of the Northwest Territories report, 43 per cent of Nunavumiut age ten to nineteen smoke. Laura Heal wants to reduce that number. She is the alcohol and drug counselor in Cambridge Bay. She says the trip will include northern values. "One of the unique components of the program is that we're building in some of the strategies of quitting with Inuit values and beliefs. For an example of that is resilience, working through storms." Heal says some teenagers have already expressed interest in the trip and she's looking for more.
