PINE
RIDGE — The SuAnne Big Crow Boys & Girls Club in Pine Ridge will celebrate the completion of a new computer
lab today during an open house and summer membership kickoff. The club recently finished the computer lab with a $7,000 grant from a foundation that seeks to bridge the digital divide. The new computer lab was set up with help from PowerUP, an organization comprised of nonprofit groups, corporations and state and federal government agencies. The group, led by America Online chairman and chief executive Steve Case, works to help youths in poor, rural areas to obtain skills, experiences and resources to succeed in the digital age. The club, which primarily serves youths 7 to 18 years old, recently added Internet access to the lab through a satellite connection, Executive Director Chick Big Crow said. The lab has 15 computers, nine donated as part of the PowerUP package. The club also has been offering adults basic computer classes in the lab. PowerUP provides hardware, teaching software for grades K-12, servers, free AOL accounts and Internet access for a year, funding for a VISTA volunteer to run the lab and other items necessary to set up a computer lab. The club has about 268 youth members in Pine Ridge and has centers in Batesland and Martin, Big Crow said, The club also would like to add PowerUP centers at those sites, she added. A new $6.2 million youth center that will include two computer labs is being built about a mile east of the current center on Highway 18, Big Crow said. It is set for completion in May 2002, she said. |
