The Centre for Indigenous Peoples' Nutrition and Environment (CINE), an independent
research and education resource for Indigenous peoples. CINE's goal is to enhance the quality of life of Indigenous
peoples around the world by addressing topics related to traditional food systems.
Reporting to the director, the incumbent will be responsible for managing response strategy requests received from
communities of Indigenous peoples and for managing the human resources of the Centre; will promote CINE through
community relations and as a resource for communities; will initiate and coordinate fund-raising efforts, manage
media communications, prepare proposals, represent CINE in meetings, manage budget and report preparation and undertake
related managerial duties as well as acting as Associate Director. The successful candidate will posses a degree
in Business Administration or Management, relevant management and fund-raising experience, and will be an outstanding

National Science Foundation
The Florida Institute of Technology's Department of Marine and Environmental Systems
(DMES) is offering National Science Foundation sponsored summer internships focusing on applied research in science,
engineering, and management of coastal zones. Interns will participate in an eight week summer program working
with scientists on projects including inlet management, restoration of salt marshes, redirection of flood control
systems to restore natural water flows, beach nourishment, biofouling, coastal sedimentary processes and overcoming
barriers to sustainable development. Participants will be expected to develop and execute an independent research
project with the guidance of a faculty research mentor at Florida Tech. On-site field trips to management agencies
at the county, state, and federal level will be made to introduce participants to the type of research that is
needed for proper management of coastal resources. In conjunction with the scheduled field trips and through invited
seminars, the students will have an opportunity to meet individuals from private industry and government that work
in the fields of coastal engineering and resource management to expose the students to non-academic career options.
Who May Apply: Recruitment of interns is focused on, but not limited to, women and minority candidates. Students
from institutions that do not have active research programs are also encourage to apply. Applicants must be undergraduate
students who have completed their sophomore year in college, are attending a four-year university, have earned
at least a 3.0 GPA in their field, and are US citizens are permanent residents.

JOHNSON O'MALLEY PROGRAM ASSISTANT
Under the direction of the Social Services Director, and the Johnson O'Malley Education Committee, the Program
Assistant will assist in meeting the stated objectives of the Johnson O'Malley (JOM) Educational Program. This
is a part-time position only.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Will provide Tutoring at Table Bluff Reservation - Community Center for Youth.
- Will lead children's groups or field trips.
- Will assist with providing for culturally and educationally appropriate training and
services.
- Will assist with providing coordination of presentations to youth and elders.
- Will assist with designing and implementing programs to strengthen traditional knowledge,
increase academic performance, and develop student skills.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- At least one-year experience working with Native American Youth is desirable
- A Bachelor's degree in a related field with attendant experience working in a Tribal
environment is desirable. Past experience with children and knowledge of their ages and developmental stages is
helpful. The ability to write clear, concise documents, and make oral presentations is needed.
- A Class B California Driver's License or the willingness to apply for one is desirable.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Possess a valid California Driver's License, and automobile insurance. \
- Must work well with other staff, and be courteous to Tribal members and visitors.
- Basic group management and teaching skill along with knowledge of Wiyot or other Native
American cultures is needed.
- The JOM Program Assistant will represent Table Bluff Reservation-Wiyot Tribe in a
professional manner.
- A combination of life skills and education leading to the ability to meet all of the
above requirements is expected.
- Continuing education through classes and workshops is required regularly.
- At least one-year work experience with youth of various ages is required.

Program Background: The ITCA Community Tobacco Education and Prevention Program provides funding to Indian tribes
and Urban Indian Centers (UIC) in Arizona to plan and implement their own Tobacco Education and Prevention Project.
ITCA CTEPP is currently funding a total of eleven (11) Local Projects (LPs), eight (8) tribes and three (3) UICs.
ITCA CTEPP plays the role of program and financial monitor of these LPs, as well as general liaison between the
LPs and the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) Tobacco Education and Prevention Program (AzTEPP). Each
LPs plan is to include specific strategies that address prevention, cessation and environmental tobacco smoke,
using traditional Native American practices and ceremonies that address the health dangers surrounding the use
of commercial tobacco.
Qualifications: The ITCA CTEPP is seeking one (1) graduate level American Indian student currently enrolled as
a full/part time student. The student must be willing to work and travel throughout the State of Arizona. The position
is funded for 520 hrs. and benefits are not included.

SUMMER COURSE
Asian and Pacific Islander Studies
Multicultural Summer Program in Honolulu
The UCLA Asian American Studies Center, in conjunction with the American Studies Department
of the University of Hawai'i, Manoa, will once again offer its Multicultural Summer Program in Honolulu for graduate,
undergraduate, and high school students. The award-winning program, which was inaugurated nearly a decade ago,
provides an intensive, six-week immension in Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in Hawai'i through
a multidisciplinary survey of their histories, cultures, and community issues.
Through classroom presentations, field frips, field studies community internships,
and independent research projects, students will gain an understanding and appreciation for Hawai'i's distinct
nature as a diverse and dynamic Asian American and Pacific Islander population. Students earn 8 quarter credits
for the two required classes they must take, and have the option of earning 4 additional quarter credits through
independent study. Directed by Erin Wright and Roderick LaBrador of the UCLA Asian American Studies Center, the
program runs from Saturday, June 30 to Saturday, August 11, 2001.

Work in the Lab:
The work consists of short experiments at the bench studying the concept, mechanisms and advantages of composting;
and performing experiments on air pollution measurement, data collection and analysis.
Field Trips:
Also, students will be bused to 4 other research labs in the area for 2-day field trips (one day in touring research
labs, the other in the field). These research labs will introduce them to drinking water quality projects, commercial
fishery exhibits, forest preservation studies, food biotechnology (insect resistant corn crops, drought-tolerant
seed research), ground water contamination associated with landfill leachate, etc..
Product Produced:
Students will be required to write a report for presentation (PowerPoint) on a selected environmental problem/solution
that might apply to their communities. They will be tutored every step along the way before making their presentation
on the last day.
Cultural Host Provided for the Summer
A Cultural Leader will be hired as a Cultural Host to introduce students to the diverse community in this area
on their own time after 5 pm.
Criteria for Eligibility:
Students should have finished their Sophomore and/or Junior year of college by the end of May, 2001. GPA should
be between 2.8 and 3.5 and be a U S Citizen.

Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP)
Program Description:
The Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP) is currently seeking interns and host sites for the
2001-2002 Professional Internship Program. This unique training program offers an opportunity for Tribal Air Quality
Professionals to experience individualized training, experience and exposure within an air quality area of interest.
Additionally, the program encourages the development of mentoring relationships between host sites and interns.
In addition to interested host sites, OAQPS (Office of Air Quality Planning & Standards- North Carolina) as
a host site offers 8 training modules that may be of interest to tribal air quality professionals and are available
as internship options.
This unique program places tribal air quality professionals in an appropriate local, tribal, state, or federal
air quality agency for a one or two week internship with an experienced professional. Tribal air quality professionals
who have completed at least two ITEP American Indian Air Quality Training Program workshops are eligible.
The Professional Internship Program is funded by the U.S. EPA Office of Air and Radiation. ITEP will award each
intern a stipend to be used by the intern to pay for travel, lodging and subsistence costs. The intern's regular
employer is responsible for his/her salary, fringe benefits (e.g., health insurance, social security) plus additional
expenses incurred by the intern in excess of the stipend.
