Guidance Counsellor Hopes Career Fair Will Benefit Native Students |

 DALHOUSIE,
N.B. - A career fair in Dalhousie is trying to encourage native students to continue on with their education."There's very few kids from the native community that go on to the NB community college for one reason or another" Patrick Barbour, a guidance councillor at Dalhousie High School, says he wants more native students to go on to post-secondary education. "There's very few kids from the native community that go on to the NB community college for one reason or another," he says. Barbour helped organize a career fair and had students in grades 6 to 12 fill out a survey about their career interests. He says once the results were in, the school began its preparations. "From that point we moved on to inviting people whom we thought would enhance the career perspectives and educational and occupational careers for these kids," he says. Local native entrepreneurs, community college representatives and even NHL players were invited to Wednesday's career fair. Polyanna Menard, a spokesperson for the Department of Indian Affairs, says there is a need for native role models. "There isn't a lot of aboriginal representation in the work force," she says. "So to increase it we brought in a lot of aboriginal people currently in the labour force." Menard says she hopes that students will be more confident about entering the work force and post secondary education if they see other natives who have already been there. |
