Cherokee Nation Higher Education Scholarships
The Higher Education Program was contracted from the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1983,
with the first awards made to students attending college in the 1983 summer session. In 1990, the Cherokee Nation
negotiated a Self-Governance Compact with the U.S. Government that established a direct relationship between the
Cherokee Nation and the U.S. Congress. The compact authorized a direct block grant to the tribe to be allocated
among various tribal programs and services, including higher education, in accordance with tribal priorities.

INDIAN HEALTH SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM AND APPLICATIONS
The Indian Health Scholarship Program is now accepting applications for the academic
year 2001-2002 awards cycle. Full-time and part-time academic scholarships will be funded for each of the three
(3) scholarship programs listed below:
Health Professions Preparatory Scholarship awards are made to American Indian or Alaskan Natives (1) who have successful
completed high school education or high school equivalency and (2) who have been accepted for enrollment in a compensatory,
pre-professional general education courses or curriculum. Support is limited to 2 years for full-time students
and the part-time equivalent of 2 years not to exceed 4 years for part-time students. Eligible academic programs
being considered are:
a. Pre-Dietetics
b. Pre-Engineering
c. Pre-Medical Technology
d. Pre-Nursing
e. Pre-Pharmacy
f. Pre-Physical Therapy
g. Pre-Social Work (Jr and Sr undergraduate years)
Health Professions Pregraduate Scholarship awards are made to American Indian and Alaskan Natives (1) who have
successfully completed high school education or high school equivalency and (2) who have been accepted for enrollment
or are enrolled in an accredited pregraduate program leading to a baccalaureate degree in:
a. Pre-Medicine
b. Pre-Dentistry
Support is limited to 4 years for full-time students and the part-time equivalent of 4 years not to exceed 8 years
for part-time students.
Health Professions Scholarships are awarded only to individuals who are members of a Federally recognized tribe
(State recognized does not qualify). To be eligible for this scholarship, the individual (1) must be enrolled in
a Federally recognized tribe and (2) must be enrolled in an appropriately accredited school and pursuing a course
of study in one of the health professional programs as follows:

Scholarship renewed if Recipient maintains good academic status

TEACH FOR AMERICA
Teach For America is the national corps of outstanding and diverse recent college graduates
of all academic majors who commit two years to teach in under-resourced urban and rural public schools. No education
background or teaching experience is necessary to apply to this program. Corps members
receive a full-time teacher's salary and, as a result of our membership in AmeriCorps, $4,725 per year to pay back
student loans or to put toward graduate school, as well as deferrals on student loans. After the two-year commitment,
alumni continue working to expand educational opportunity through a variety of careers, some remaining in education,
others continuing their studies at top-notch graduate schools, and still others working at a wide variety of organizations
in the non-profit, government and corporate sectors.

EXTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES IN ALASKA
FOR ENGINEERING AND ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SCIENCE MAJORS
The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC), Department of Environmental Health
& Engineering (DEHE) is currently recruiting engineering students to take part in externships for Summer 2001
to assist in rural sanitation or health facility related projects. We are particularly interested in Alaska Native
and American Indian candidates.
Externs will work in one of three divisions of DEHE depending on the candidate's educational pursuit and the needs
of the ANTHC. Externs provide support to professional staff in design, monitoring of
construction activities, and project development both in an office setting and through periodic travel to many
remote villages around the state of Alaska.
To be eligible for an ANTHC Student Extern assignment, the candidate
must:
- Have junior or senior standing in an engineering or environmental health program accredited
by an appropriate accrediting body for that field (such as ABET for engineering majors); or
- Be enrolled in a master's degree or doctoral program in a health related field; with
a
- qualifying bachelor's degree;
- Expect to return to full-time undergraduate or graduate school after participation
in the ANTHC Student Extern Program;
- Have a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.0 in pursuit of a bachelors degree
or 3.0 in pursuit of a post-graduate degree (on a 4.0 scale).

Description of Internships:
The International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management is a non-profit corporation established to assist
Indian tribes and other indigenous peoples in the sustainable utilization, management, development and conservation
of their natural resources and protection of their environment. The internship program is designed to help build
a cadre of scientific, environmental, legal, and other professionals knowledgeable about indigenous issues and
cultural concerns.
The Institute has internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in a wide range of disciplines
including the social and physical sciences, management, law, and technical fields as they relate to tribal resource
management.
Required prerequisites:
Requirements vary depending on the position. The Institute considers education and work experience. Successful
interns have come to the Institute from a variety of backgrounds, including political science, social work, environmental

Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP)
Program Description:
The Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP) is currently seeking interns and host sites for the
2001-2002 Professional Internship Program. This unique training program offers an opportunity for Tribal Air Quality
Professionals to experience individualized training, experience and exposure within an air quality area of interest.
Additionally, the program encourages the development of mentoring
relationships between host sites and interns.
In addition to interested host sites, OAQPS (Office of Air Quality Planning & Standards- North Carolina) as
a host site offers 8 training modules that may be of interest to tribal air quality professionals and are available
as internship options (see attached).
This unique program places tribal air quality professionals in anappropriate local, tribal, state, or federal air
quality agency for a one or two week internship with an experienced professional. Tribal air quality professionals
who have completed at least two ITEP American Indian Air Quality Training Program workshops are eligible.
The Professional Internship Program is funded by the U.S. EPA Office of Air and Radiation. ITEP will award each
intern a stipend to be used by the intern to pay for travel, lodging and subsistence costs. The intern's regular
employer is responsible for his/her salary, fringe benefits (e.g., health insurance, social security) plus additional
expenses incurred by the intern in excess of the stipend.
