Cathy Freeman's awesome golden win in
the 400 metres final was a remarkable personal triumph and a great moment for Australians especially Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander people.
The Tasmanian Regional Aboriginal Council congratulates Cathy, not only for the win but for the inspiration she
provides to our people, on and off the track.
Cathy was already worth her weight in gold before the run.
At the start of the Games, she lit the Olympic flame, last night she lit up Australia.
Her performance shows that when our people are properly resourced and supported they can achieve the highest levels
possible.
Cathy also becomes Australia's first Aboriginal track champion in a year when Reconciliation is a vital issue.
She carried the Aboriginal and Australian flags around the track after her win to announce to the world she is
a proud Australian and a proud Aboriginal person.
We congratulate her.

Aboriginal myths tell of legendary totemic beings who wandered the continent, neatly
carving symbols of food, water and simple stories into the earth -- messages for future settlers of the vast Australian
land.
They are known to foreigners as "dreaming tracks," but to the Aboriginals, they are known as "The
Footprints of the Ancestors."
