Note: The department expects to appoint an aboriginal scholar/writer/teacher beginning

Applications are invited from scholar-teachers of Aboriginal ancestry for a tenure-track position in the Department
of English at the University of Saskatchewan to develop innovative undergraduate and perhaps graduate courses in
Aboriginal literature and culture. Candidates should be prepared to offer the Ph.D. and/or demonstrated alternative
qualifications in the study, research, and teaching of Aboriginal cultural production, including textual production,
and/or be an artist with substantial published literary work. It is expected that the appointment will commence
on 1 July 2001, the rank to be determined by the qualifications of the successful applicant.

position of Director
Native Studies/First Nations Studies
The Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia invites applications for the tenure-stream/tenured
position of Director of the new First Nations Studies Program. We wish to appoint a scholar with a doctoral degree
(or an MA and extensive publication and experience) and an established record of research, teaching and publication
in First Nations Studies, who will provide leadership and undertake program development, teaching and research
in the program. The Director will liaise with the First Nations House of Learning. Candidates should have proven
experience with First Nations communities, organizations and issues, as well as knowledge and understanding of
First Nations cultures.
The program offers a BA with a Major or a Minor in First Nations Studies. Students take the equivalent of three
full courses specifically developed for the program, one in each of second, third and fourth year. The fourth year
course includes a research practicum conducted in cooperation with a First Nations organization or community. The
remaining course requirements are fulfilled by a wide range of courses offered in other disciplines and faculties.
The appointment will be effective 1 Jan. 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter and is subject to final budgetary
approval. The closing date for the competition is 30 September 2000
or until the position is filled. Salary, tenure status and academic rank will be commensurate with qualifications
and experience. Departmental home will depend on the disciplinary specialization of the successful candidate. UBC
