(SUPPLEMENTAL- FORD FOUNDATION LEADERSHIP PROGRAM - PROGRAM DESCRIPTION)

The Ford Foundation is starting a major initiative that will focus on leadership in the United States. The program seeks to recognize individuals and groups of people that have been able to develop effective and creative solutions to tough community problems. Twenty awards of $100,000 per year, for three consecutive years, will be given to these leaders, who will take part in a two-year leadership program.

The program, tentatively titled the New Leaders Program (NLP), will recognize, support and study emerging leaders and promote their work through a national communications campaign. The program is based on a collaborative comprised of the Ford Foundation, the Advocacy Institute (AI), and the Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service of New York University. The collaboration encompasses the following distinct components: leadership support, public communication, research and documentation, and evaluation.

The Advocacy Institute, a Washington, D.C. group, will take primary responsibility for designing and implementing the leadership support and communication components. The Institute will provide resources to leaders through funding and program-wide meetings to expand their capacity for effective leadership. AI will also demonstrate the importance of effective leadership for social change through a strategic communications campaign. The Robert F. Wagner School will lead the research and documentation component of the New Leaders Program. Coordinated from the Wagner School, research partners in several regions throughout the country will undertake the research and documentation efforts, facilitating collaboration between the leaders and researchers to inform the research agenda with a practitioner perspective and to support reflective conceptualization of practice among the chosen leaders. Organized around one single research focus, several research and documentation strategies will be developed to produce and co-produce original knowledge about different models of leadership, while also documenting the leadership stories behind the accomplishments of the selected program participants.
