$3000 Prize for Youth Environmental Leaders Earth Island Institute has just launched the The Brower Youth Awards, giving a $3000 cash prize to each of six youth who demonstrate exceptional environmental leadership. "We as parents and grandparents have mostly only slowed the rate at which things have gotten worse," said David R. Brower, founder and Chairman of Earth Island Institute, "With our help, this can be the generation that restores the earth and begins to increase the rate at which things get better." The Brower Youth Awards are founded in honor of David R. Brower, a lifelong environmental leader. Brower, who turns 88 July 1, 2000 has been the example and inspiration for five generations of environmentalists. Throughout his career, Brower has continually recognized and supported the efforts of young leaders. The Brower Youth Awards will honor his legacy and insure future generations carry on the work of "CPR for the Planet" (conservation, preservation, restoration). "The Brower Youth Awards are a powerful recognition of the role of young people in the environmental movement," said Lisa Wallace, Director of Restoration Initiatives at Earth Island Institute. "For the first time, the substantial contributions of youth will be acknowledged with a cash prize to assist the recipients in furthering their work." The Brower Youth Awards will recognize leadership efforts across an ethnic, geographic, and nonpartisan cross-section of young people, ranging in age from thirteen through twenty-two. The prizes will highlight projects ranging from campus political organizing to restoration of habitat, and will be awarded at Earth Island Institute's 4th Annual Party for the Planet, October 14, 2000 in San Francisco, CA Applications are due August 4, 2000.
