OKIT Site Wins First Place and Best of Show in Internet Competitions
by Theresa Wilkinson at Oklahoma Indian Times

The OKIT Online Web site won several awards in the regional online competitions of the Society of Technical (STC) Communication.

STC is an individual membership organization dedicated to advancing the arts and sciences of technical communication. Its 23,000 members include technical writers, editors, graphic designers, multimedia artists, Web and Intranet page information designers, translators and others whose work involves making technical information understandable and available to those who need it.

The site won the following awards:

  • Award of Distinguished Technical Communication (1st place) in the 1999-2000 Southwestern Ohio Chapter Online Communication Competition.
  • Best of Show in the 1999-2000 Southwestern Ohio Chapter Online Communication Competition.
  • Award of Excellence in the 27th Annual Chicago Technical Publications Art, Online Communication Competition 1999 - 2000.
  • The site is now being judged in the STC International Online Communication Competition.

Here are some of the judges’ comments about the site:

  • "Beautiful site. Well organized."
  • "Good use of headlines as links to the articles."
  • "The layout is great - very easy to follow."
  • "Nice use of graphics, including book cover shots as links to Amazon.com so a user can buy the book."
  • "I like the Contents graphic."
  • "Unlike many online news sources, the OKIT entry conveys a sense of genuine interest and personal concern for the welfare of its local Native American readership. For instance, the Health section provides articles on diabetes as a Native American health risk and provides links to a diabetic cookbook as well as nutrition tips. This is a very good example of OKIT's proactive response to a specialized readership need."
  • "Beyond local interests, the Links section is very powerful. The links section is the keystone for accomplishing the OKIT purpose. The thirteen link categories are singularly and collectively interesting and relevant information set. OKIT provides nearly 150 good quality links in these categories."
  • "The design of the OKIT site was excellent."

Other sections of the site make full use of the Internet as a powerful communication media. An example is the Jobs section. More than a flat "Help Wanted" portion of the Classifieds, the Jobs section takes appropriate advantage of Internet communication to allow Native American applicants to use the Internet to communicate with hiring companies. Another example is the reader response tool on the Opinion page that allows the reader to email an editorial or comment to the OKIT staff.

Jim Gray, Co-publisher of the Oklahoma Indian Times said, "First I would like to thank the Southwestern Ohio STC for giving our site this unique honor. Since, April of 1998, our Web site has made the Oklahoma Indian Times more than just a regional media outlet, the use of graphics, style and content have combined to create a brand new media outlet on a national and international stage. We are gratified for the appreciation and honor the technical communicators in America have given us. It certainly is giving us more confidence in exercising our creativity and influence in this new and ever expanding medium. Since the very beginning, Theresa Wilkinson with W-edge design has listened to our issues and concerns and has helped translate them from the newspaper format to a completely integrated and interactive Web site. We are thankful to have W-edge design as an important partner in the process of informing the world about Indian country."
